I got up early today to catch the train down to Mostar, passing through some spectacular forested mountain scenery on the way. It was an absolutely beautiful late-summer's day in the Herzegovinian capital and I enjoyed a leisurely day taking in the atmosphere, hanging out in cafés and shady spots, and seeing the sights.
The main attraction in Mostar is the Stari Most. The bridge was commissioned by Suleiman The Magnificent and completed in 1566. The original bridge stood for over 400 years but, during the Bosnian War, it came under heavy shelling and was destroyed. The bridge was later reconstructed, using some of the original building material that was salvaged from the Neretva River, and it now stands as a monument to the rebuilding of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Nearby is the picturesque Kriva Cuprija (Crooked Bridge), said to have been built as a test run for the larger Stari Most.
