The flies seen from above. The male (upper) has his wings folded over his back; the female (lower) has her wings spread. The male's hind legs have short, bright golden fur on the bottom side.

#FridayFlyday: just encountered this gorgeous metallic bronze-green-blue soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae) in the garden! It was very placid and let me get lots of photos.

The yellow nub beneath is one of the halteres, wings that became modified into gyroscope-like organs.

A slightly higher view of the fly shows that its abdomen is an iridescent blue-green.

Standing in an orange/yellow flower, in close-up, is a tiny black fly with a sharp, cone-shaped nose, two alert little antennae arising from the cone, and a long, elbowed proboscis. The fly is covered in short, apressed silvery hairs.

Ok - completely stuck and feeling stupid. What is this #insect that came to light in the Ikara-Flinders National Park two weeks ago?

Massive eyes and pathetically feeble legs remind me of #Stratiomyidae #Chiromyzinae, and the antennae kind of fit.

But the shapes of the head and thorax point away from #Diptera.

The horny patches at the base of the wings (I don't think they're elytra) remind me of something I can't place.

There's a lovely #weevil in the shots too.

Friday Flyday! I do a double-take every time I see these. Hoplitomyia mutabilis soldier flies are excellent mimics of Mexican honey wasps.

Each night I run an automated #insect light here in Canberra using a #RaspberryPi, Logitech BRIO #webcam, UV LEDs and #OpenCV image segmentation. Some example images from the night of 3/4 November: Porela delineata (#Lasiocampidae), Stenoptilia zophodactylus (#Pterophoridae), Thallarcha partita (#Erebidae, #Arctiinae) and Exaireta spinigera (#Stratiomyidae).

My hope is to build a large enough set of identified images to attempt to train a #model and move towards automated #timeseries capture.
