Macro photo of a small black fly in side view sitting in a bright yellow flower. The fly has an oddly conical head ending at a sharp point, with two small antennae emerging like rabbit ears just shy of the tip. The fly’s jointed, needle-like proboscis probes the flower.

trying to be perceived as a normal, friendly person by nodding and smiling as an old man passes me on the sidewalk while I'm hunched over someone's bushes next to their green bin extremely suspiciously, taking photos of flies having sex

#FridayFlyday: just encountered this gorgeous metallic bronze-green-blue soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae) in the garden! It was very placid and let me get lots of photos.

Side view of a fly on a leaf. The fly is somewhat bigger than a housefly, with short pointy antennae, black eyes with a rainbow sheen, a shiny carapace that goes from bronze to green, and straight brown wings folded its back. The yellow nub beneath is one of the halteres, wings that became modified into gyroscope-like organs.A slightly higher view of the fly shows that its abdomen is an iridescent blue-green.View from above; it is perched calmly on the leaf.

Das ist vermutlich die #Waffenfliege Odontomyia flavissima. #Waffenfliegen sind an ihren spitzen Dornen am Ende ihres Brustbereichs erkennbar. Diese hat sehr hübsche Augen.

My Alexanders (Zizia - I forget which species) are an absolute pollinator magnet! Several species each of flower flies (Syrphidae), native bees (and honey bees), potter wasps, assorted other flies (including the green - green! - Soldier Fly pictured), and a few Ichneumonid(?) wasps for good measure. The place is buzzing! Native plants for the win! #pollinators #insects #NativePlantGardening #Stratiomyidae #Diptera

Friday Flyday!

Here's an insect I'd never seen before: Berkshiria albistylum. A tiny, poorly-known soldier fly. Hanging out in the yard just minding her own business.

Just look at this odd little fly. Nemotelus kansensis (Stratiomyidae), photographed yesterday in Texas hill country.

Standing in an orange/yellow flower, in close-up, is a tiny black fly with a sharp, cone-shaped nose, two alert little antennae arising from the cone, and a long, elbowed proboscis. The fly is covered in short, apressed silvery hairs.

Ok - completely stuck and feeling stupid. What is this #insect that came to light in the Ikara-Flinders National Park two weeks ago?

Massive eyes and pathetically feeble legs remind me of #Stratiomyidae #Chiromyzinae, and the antennae kind of fit.

But the shapes of the head and thorax point away from #Diptera.

The horny patches at the base of the wings (I don't think they're elytra) remind me of something I can't place.

There's a lovely #weevil in the shots too.

Friday Flyday! I do a double-take every time I see these. Hoplitomyia mutabilis soldier flies are excellent mimics of Mexican honey wasps.

Friday Flyday! Here's a male Nemotelus soldier fly from Texas who's got his eyes on you. And everything else. Pretty much a complete surveillance unit.

Each night I run an automated #insect light here in Canberra using a #RaspberryPi, Logitech BRIO #webcam, UV LEDs and #OpenCV image segmentation. Some example images from the night of 3/4 November: Porela delineata (#Lasiocampidae), Stenoptilia zophodactylus (#Pterophoridae), Thallarcha partita (#Erebidae, #Arctiinae) and Exaireta spinigera (#Stratiomyidae).

My hope is to build a large enough set of identified images to attempt to train a #model and move towards automated #timeseries capture.
