Portrait of a human bot fly. Belize. Friend? Maybe not. But cuter as an adult, I'd say.

Macro photo of a large grey fly in side view on a pure white background. The fly has a dark metallic blue abdomen, red eyes, and a sort of fleshy looking rounded face.

#FlyDay #FridayFlyDay #Birds and more Heermann's Gulls, flying off into the mist off Tennessee Valley Beach on a misty afternoon. 🪶

A view out to see and a stack with birds on it. In the air above, apart from the mist, are a group of Heermann's Gull, flying out to sea and dissappearing into the mist. Grey gulls, but not really identifiable from this picture - I had seen them before they toook to the air.

i guess we're 20 minutes into #FridayFlyday so here are some Vancouver Island beach flies for coho salmon California Neil, a standard here & a fly that's got as many variations as people who fish it Once again, these are "black light specials"

Here is me keeping my kid full of awe and wonder.

A dark haired man in sunglasses wearing a pilot headset taking a selfie. He is smiling at the camera. Behind him is a child wearing ear protection looking out the window at the ground far below the aircraft.

@DWTSquawk7600 Better than the office! #fridayflyday #avgeek

Me, flying left seat.

@DWTSquawk7600 Here's me, in the back, of a Lufthansa A340 way back in 2013. The photo looks so staged. And I guess the window shades were down because we were asked to close them. #FridayFlyDay #Aviation #AvGeek

A man with glasses, brown hair, blue eyes, drinks from a can of German Warsteiner beer in a window seat of an airliner. The head rest of the seat has a Lufthansa orange covering. For some reason the window shades are closed. A vintage Bad Elf can be seen on the armrest.

#fridayflyday - Post a picture of you flying (in any seat, front or back). Use the hashtag - pass it on! Let's fly into this weekend, eh? #aviation #avgeek

Me piloting a Piper Cherokee at about 3,000 ft over Missouri. Thumbs up (happy camper!)

Happy #FridayFlyDay from my garden!

1. A long-legged fly (family Dolichopodidae) that actually stayed still for a photo
2. A hoverfly (family Syrphidae) amid the brown-eyed Susans, methodically going from flower to flower

It is on a green patio table, eyeing the camera keenly.A largeish yellow and black, bee-like hoverfly on a brown-eyed Susan flower (like a black-eyed Susan but smaller). Its eyes are dark red, its face silver, and its legs dusted with yellow pollen.

For this #FridayFlyday: today I was browsing around trying to ID a fly and inadvertently discovered these. Ant-mimicking flies, genus _Myrmecothea_. Now I've seen it all. inaturalist.org/taxa/132235-My

Close-up of an antlike fly on a light brown background. It has a pointed face, a distinct thorax, round abdomen, skinny black legs, just like an ant—but fly wings. Photo by Katja Schulz.A black ant-mimicking fly perched on someone's clothing. Aside from its "gas mask"-like face and fly wings, it has exactly the vibe of an ant. Photo by Louis Burns.Head-on view of an ant-mimicking fly. Somehow, even its mouthparts look slightly more ant-like than your typical fly's. I don't know how they do it.An ant-mimicking fly perched on a leaf, wings up, seen from the side and slightly behind. Its round abdomen is narrowed a bit before the thorax to create the look of an ant's pedicel. Photo by Mark Faherty.

#FridayFlyDay #FlyDay and this Western Gull catching the evening rays as it flies over the harbour. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #BirdPhotography #FujiFilm #XT5 #Nature

A Wester Gull, a largish seagull with yellow bill, pink feet and a red spot on the lower bill. White underparts, grey wings with black tips. Flying towards left of camera, head down looking at the water, wings in a V shape. Out of focus greenery behind. Evening sun coming from left of frame catches the birds right side.

Another #FridayFlyDay #FlyDay and a young California Gull finding that sharing fish isn't something Double-crested Cormorants do! #Birds 🪶 #Photography #BirdPhotography #FujiFilm #XT5

A young California Gull, just taking off from the water after trying to battle a Double-crested Cormorant for a fish that it has just caught. The gull is probably first year, still dappled light grey-brown with pink legs, and seen here from the back with wings spread and bill turned to its right. The cormorant is in the water, and is black with yellow around the bill, a small fish in its mouth and the emerald eye just visible. Reasonably calm water, a few small waves.

#FridayFlyday #FlyDay, and the Red-shouldered Hawk again from yesterday taking off from one spot and it conveniently landed in another spot for more pictures. #Birds 🪶 #Photography #FujiFIlm #XT5

A Red-shouldered Hawk, just taking off from the branch of a Coastal Live Oak, Barred dark and light wings, with leading red-orange 'shoulders' visible as wings are raised. Yellow legs and feet still hanging low at the back as it pushes off.

Just now I was in the garden, waiting for the laundry to finish, minding my own business and not looking for any bugs at all, when a plant bug (Miridae) (I think, anyway) dropped out of the sky and landed on the table next to me. Two small flies were feeding on it.

Sometimes #FridayFlyDay comes to you, I guess.

A yellowish plant bug (a kind of true bug, with a stylet mouth) on its back on a green table. Two small housefly-like flies, fairly nondescript except for two bold stripes down their faces and horizontal dark red lines across their eyes, are latched on to its side, digging in with their mouthparts.

Wife: I saw something cool today.

Me (excitedly): Was it a wasp stashing flies in its nest for its babies? Cause that's what I saw.

Wife: Ah...no.

Me: *shows her the video of wasp*

Wife: So, my cool thing...

Me: *stares blankly*

#FridayFlyday: just encountered this gorgeous metallic bronze-green-blue soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae) in the garden! It was very placid and let me get lots of photos.

#flyday #FlydayFriday #bugstodon #insects #flies #SoldierFlies #Diptera #Stratiomyidae

Side view of a fly on a leaf. The fly is somewhat bigger than a housefly, with short pointy antennae, black eyes with a rainbow sheen, a shiny carapace that goes from bronze to green, and straight brown wings folded its back. The yellow nub beneath is one of the halteres, wings that became modified into gyroscope-like organs.A slightly higher view of the fly shows that its abdomen is an iridescent blue-green.View from above; it is perched calmly on the leaf.

Friday Flyday! Here's Meromacrus acutus, a wasp-mimicking hover fly from Texas.

A Red-winged Blackbird, a small-medium black bird with striking red bars on the front of the wong close to the body. No obvious yellow band that appears in some places.
