Am Canal Grande in Trieste stehen zwei große Kirchen: die katholische Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo und der serbisch-orthodoxe Tempio della Santissima Trinità e di San Spiridione.

Vor der katholischen Kirche steht eine Statue des ehemaligen Erzbischofs Antonio Santin. Wieso er von der Kirche wegschaut, ist allerdings eine gute Frage.

Katholische Kirche Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo, von vorne betrachtet: in weiß gehalten, wirkt der Bau wie ein Kubus mit einem Vordach, das wie ein römischer Tempel von Säulen getragen wird.

Die serbisch orthodoxe Kirche von innen: ein kleines Kuppeldach ist blau ausgemalt, eine gold hinterlegte Maria in der Mitte. Die anderen Elemente der Dachbögen sind ockergold gehalten. Ein Kronleuchter mit Kerzen hängt von der Decke.

Kreuzfahrtschiffe sind in italienischen Städten ja heiß diskutiert. Hier mal ein Einblick, wie es aussieht, wenn so ein Schiff im Hafen von Triest liegt:

Einmal von Opicina am Berg aus gesehen, und einmal aus nächster Nähe an der Stazione marittima.

Wie klein und idyllisch wirken dagegen die Booterln, die im Canal Grande vor den Palazzos parken..
Und auch am ersten Fotos kann man einige Größenunterschiede zwischen diversen Schiffen und Booten erkennen.

Foto am Canale Grande in Triest: Zuerst sehen sind im Canale liegenden Privatboote, die aussehen wie kleine Motorboote, und mit Tauen am Ufer befestigt sind. Dahinter spazieren am Gehweg Touristen direkt vor dem Palazzo Gopcevich.

Zufällig habe ich es geschafft, mit der Opicina-Straßenbahn zu fahren, während sie 2025 einige Monate lang unterwegs war.

Aktuell ist der Betrieb wieder – wie davor seit 2016 – eingestellt.

Der Wagen erklimmt das Karstplateau über der Hafenstadt. Im steilsten Teil der Strecke wird er von einem Beiwagen angeschoben (bzw am Weg hinunter abgebremst). Ein einzigartiges System von 1935!

Im September war ich nicht nur in Slowenien, sondern auch in Triest unterwegs.

Heute ein paar Fotos davon:
Zuerst ein Blick vom Porto Vecchio Richtung Norden auf die Wallfahrtskirche am Monte Grisa und den Leuchtturm Faro della Vittoria.

Dann ein Foto durch den Zaun zum Bahngelände zwischen altem Hafen und Hauptbahnhof und eines auf den Hügel dahinter, der zwischen Wolken lag.

Am alten Hafen findet man im Magazin 26 außerdem das Museo del Mare (Meeresmuseum).

The last #cyclingtrip of 2025 was short and leisurely, only as far as Miramare and Grignano. Still, there was something new — a visit (though only from the outside) to the gate on the building at the #Sartorio pier in #Trieste/#Trst, behind which there is a device that determines the mean #sea level, relative to which elevations in Slovenia and some nearby countries are defined, and which dates back to the Austro-Hungarian era!

The weekend weather in #Trst/#Trieste was rather inviting for a leisure ride on #Brompton bicycles, and not only for a ride! Also for a dip in the #sea! Surprisingly we were not the only ones to dip in the refreshing salty water that seemed much clearer than in the summer.

Repeating the last week ride on the historical #tram from #Trieste/#Trst to #VillaOpicina/#Opčine to then take the train to Ljubljana. Two #Brompton bicycles nicely fitted in the old, partially wooden tram car, with place to spare (the tram car also takes 2 regular-size bicycles from the outside). The tram operates partly as a funicular (on the steepest part, max gradient of 26%!) and climbs for 400 m from the sea level to Karst plateau.

Yesterday I went to explore a bit the #bicycle connection to the #Trieste/#Trst airport from #Monfalcone/#Tržič. Not bad, you can rather comfortably arrive on low traffic roads and dedicated cycling lanes and paths directly to the train stop at the airport. Still, there are points to be improved, but a start is a start. Not that I am interested in the airport itself, though - I sometimes use this train stop as a starting or ending point of bicycle trips.
Then, trip continued to #Isonzo/#Soča river where the cozy bar has finally been fenced-off for cars! Yay, no more dust everywhere! After a drink I had a nice time in the shadow at the river.
