Lorna had #teased her blond hair into a huge corona around her face. "I'm a lion," she told herself. She felt strong, unstoppable.

"You dimwit, it's MALE lions that have a mane," her boyfriend chortled when she confided how her do made her feel. "Lionesses don't have manes."

"I know that! Shut up!" But she felt like a tire that ran over a nail.

Later, her friend Tracy was helping her comb out her hair.

"Ditch him," Tracy advised. "That hyena doesn't deserve a lioness."

Nikon Teases the Z9’s Impressive Tracking Capabilities, Rapid FPS

Nikon has published a third teaser for its upcoming flagship mirrorless Z9 camera with the focus this time on the camera's ability to track moving subjects in a way that at the very least matches the industry's best.

Nikon's first teaser that it released in early October spent nearly its entire short run time on the exterior of the camera, namely the rear LCD. The short teaser showed that photographers can expect a design that does more than most articulating rear LCD screens in that it can tilt down as well as side to side.

The second teaser moved away from hardware design choices and into video, where Nikon appeared to show that the Z9 will have no recording limits when capturing 8K video. Through the short video, the Z9 is shown recording in 4320p30 for 30 minutes -- 8K resolution is 7,680 x 4,320 pixels -- and increasing steadily from there, eventually showing as much as one hour and 20-minutes of continuous recording.

In this third teaser, Nikon shows what photographers can expect from its tracking performance across a range of fast-moving subjects and circumstances. It first shows a dirtbike moving from the distance downwards through the frame. The next two examples show eye-tracking, first with a tennis player followed by the same with a hurdling runner. It then moves back to a vehicle, but this time a car that is moving towards the camera. In this particular clip, the Z9 appears to have its focus locked to a pair of headlights. Through the clip, focus moves from the headlights on the left to the headlights on the right as the car moves closer. A few other examples of face and eye-tracking follow.

The video clip is short, but Nikon manages to cram in many different examples of autofocus performance through a range of possible scenarios and was careful to include clips that show subjects moving from left to right, right to left, and towards the camera. Of course, Nikon shows the Z9 succeeding in all circumstances.

One other thing that Nikon teases are the frames per second, which can be heard in the last few seconds of the video. It sounds extremely fast, and is likely at least 20 frames per second.

The Z9 is very likely designed to be at least in part for sports and action photographers, so succeeding in autofocus is of prime importance, and while if the camera succeeds in what was shown here, it is perhaps less impressive as it is expected: this is the kind of performance a high-end camera has to hit to be competitive when it's up against the R3 and the Alpha 1.

Nikon has yet to provide an expectation of the Z9's official release date and pricing outside of the small amount of information it provided in March, but given the number of teasers the company has produced, it's safe to assume that information will be coming soon.

Nikon’s Second Z9 Teaser Hints at No 8K Recording Limits

Nikon has published its second Z9 teaser that spends its short 30-second run time showing off a hint of video expectations: limitless 8K recording.

Nikon's first teaser that it released in early October focused nearly entirely on the rear LCD. Nikon showed that the photographers can expect a design that can tilt down as well as side to side, which is not an entirely new feature but one that is still uncommon in the industry. This latest teaser spends nearly its entire run time focused on video recording expectations.

While the first 15 seconds shows the camera and a long telephoto lens in the hands of a wildlife photographer which does give an idea of how large the Z9 will be, it's not information that most who are eagerly anticipating the camera's arrival haven't seen before. What is new starts at the 15-second mark, and shows the camera's ability to capture 8K video.

8K recording was one of the few features that Nikon officially said would be coming to the camera when it announced the Z9 in March along with a new stacked CMOS sensor and a new processor. The first clip shows that the camera has been recording in 4320p30 for 30 minutes -- 8K resolution is 7,680 x 4,320 pixels. In the video, that recording time goes up steadily, eventually showing as much as one hour and 20-minutes of continuous recording.

Nikon appears to be hinting that there is no recording limit in 8K for the Z9 and that filmmakers will only be limited by the storage capacity of the card.

Something worth noting about 8K is the expected resolution for the Z9 and how that stacks up to the competition now that the Canon R3 is officially announced. 8K requires about 33-megapixels and the clip shows that the Z9 can shoot at that resolution at a rate of 30 frames per second. That's impressive and shows that Nikon fans should expect a camera that is not only higher resolution than the R3, but one that is also faster.

Nikon has still not provided further confirmed details on the Z9, the price it will sell for, nor when photographers can expect to be able to purchase it.

Nikon Teases the Coming Z9 and its Unusual Rear LCD

Nikon has published a 30-second ad spot that teases its forthcoming flagship camera and while not much was revealed in the short commercial, a quick glimpse of the rear LCD teases that it won't be like every other on the market.

Most of the new teaser is focused on visuals that aren't the camera, but what little there is that focuses on the forthcoming Z9 puts the new rear viewfinder on center stage. The commercial shows how it can be tilted up and down like a standard tilt screen found on many Sony cameras -- up for shooting at low angles and down for when shooting with the camera above the head -- but the final few frames of the video show that it can also tilt inwards, a feature that hasn't been common in mirrorless cameras or DSLRs.

Tilting inwards towards the right hand of the shooter has multiple benefits. Instead of requiring first needing to flip out and over and flip around like a vari-angle screen found on the Canon R3, this type of screen can do it in one motion. The first camera that comes to mind that had a similar feature might be the Pentax K1, a DSLR that had an unusual claw-like attachment from the LCD to the camera and allowed it to move at unusual angles -- including the ones seen in Nikon's above ad.

The unusual nature of this screen is probably why it was taped up in the photos seen of the Z9 at the Tokyo Olympics: Nikon did not want to show its hand.

While screens like this are unusual and useful, it alone is usually not enough to sell a camera. Luckily, Nikon isn't putting all of its eggs into that basket. Nikon has said that the Z9 will use "groundbreaking technologies," has been confirmed to feature a stacked CMOS sensor, will feature a new image processor and will be able to capture video in up to 8K. The camera is also expected to feature a 45-megapixel sensor, and some reports even expect somewhere between 120 and 160 frame per second burst shooting performance.

While the camera has technically been "announced" through a development notice released in early March, nearly all of the details behind the Z9 remain under wraps. Nikon has not provided an expected timeline for when all features will be fully revealed, but most expect that to happen sometime this fall.
