White co-wrote the song with #JimmyJam and her future husband #TerryLewis, with the latter two also producing the track. It hit number one on the #Billboard #Hot100 on November 2, 1991, making it her biggest hit to date. "Romantic" was also White's fourth number one on the Billboard #HotRAndBSingles chart. According to Billboard, the song is about sex.

The Time, The Time (Self-Titled), 1981 on Warner Bros.

This was the debut LP from Morris Day and co, though they started playing together in the early seventies under different names. The band here still includes Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who went on to become a well-known producing duo, and guitarist Jesse Johnson who made some solo releases.

While most folks know The Time from their appearance in Purple Rain and the hits that came out of that, I love this earlier record.

I keep expecting the rasping synth slide on the fourth beat of the bar, preceding a new section, like on Alexander O'Neal's 1987 'Hearsay' album (e.g. 'Sunshine').

I think I prefer Jam & Lewis's earlier productions, which were a bit more low-key, not so ramped-up stylistically.

Just an observation. Not trying to be mean. They're absolute giants of production.

This song was #1 on the Billboard chart on this day, November 22, in 1986.

I was sixteen.

I don't have words to describe what this musical arrangement meant to me at sixteen, and continues to mean.

In particular, there is a "bell-like" motif in the instrumentation at :58, 1:03 and 1:08 (repeated again later) that hits my heart in an indescribable way. Every. single. time!
