@gahlearner I prefer neither. It is kinda what the mood calls for. If there is a #fanfic idea that grabs me I HAVE to write it, same as when inspiration hits me for something original.

Same with the characters. The lines are drawn a bit different. There are characters I instantly feel, which I slip into like in a comfy coat and that need absolutely no effort to write, probably because their personalities are closer to mine or just because I have written them so long that they are a part of me. That's the case with Randall Brown and Lix Storm from #TheHour and with Galahad and Raffi on the #HeraldPetrel
Others need a bit more effort to feel myself inside their brains. The Doctor from #DoctorWho has such a long personal history and has been so many incarnations with different personalities that I need to incorporate that - and fans know much more about the lore so I have to tread careful. Both John Steed and Emma Peel from #TheAvengers are so far from my own personality that I first need to adapt to their thinking patterns to get them right.
For my own characters, Siff has such an interesting brain and I learn more and more about her since I write her POV in #HeraldPetrel2 same as Intan Lanny Kartawijaya and Sarge Hertaki. But yes, all very far from myself so, need more effort to "see" what they are doing.

I can say that some characters are closer to my heart but there is no difference between them being created by another person or by myself.

#ScribesAndMakers 04/20—Is there a movie that inspires your creative work?

Not a movie, but I think #DoctorWho and #TheHour got me into writing #fanfiction (laugh at me, but I didn't know the concept until 2019, and I am basically a fossil) so I'd cite that as inspiration. Otherwise I think everything I see, read, or listen to inspires me in some way.

"End of a Road Trip" came in at 170 chapters (174 if you count the artworks) and 228K words.

It was the last part of a four part epic story that had to be written because they ended the brilliant BBC series "The Hour" on a cliffhanger and we never got a resolve on screen. I had to write the Lix/Randall storyline to a satisfying and believable ending.

I recently reread parts of it and while there are a lot of things I have learned since I wrote it (ESPECIALLY but not limited to speaking tags) and I think some parts could be straightened I didn't find a chapter I would take out. Each part was necessary to work through the trauma of these two characters and finally give them the happy ending they deserved.
I would do it again and I would probably still end up with just as many words.

Anna Chancellor and Peter Capaldi as Lix and Randall in the BBC series The Hour. He has his hand on her knee while she has basically hugged his arm. They look at each other in a way you just see that although they have been apart for 20 years there is something very much "there" between them. The look tells a whole story, I think even if you don't know their story in particular, you can sense that in the image.

I tend to mix some Spanish words into my #TheHour #fanfic because both Lix and Randall have been in the Spanish Civil War together and it is only natural they picked some up.

In #HeraldPetrel there are certain terms and idioms from various species that made it into the common language.
From the current #WiP:

"It was a classic /Ashtar N’ Rhoghar/ situation. There was no good solution, one was as bad as the other."

Usually I tend to explain immediately, but not always.

My "short" story is over 5K already. 😩

Good job I quite enjoy editing, because I really do make a lot of work for myself.

Still, I feel like I'm finally getting in touch with this story, to the point of having one of those writing sessions where it's annoying to have to break off and do stupid things like eat or go to the bathroom that are just a distraction.

Story is about a journalist and I couldn't help but call him Randall. IYKYK. #writing #writingcommunity #TheHour
