Give a welcome to anyone whose faith is not strong, but do not get into arguments about doubtful points. One person may have faith enough to eat any kind of food; another, less strong, will eat only vegetables. Those who feel free to eat freely are not to condemn those who are unwilling to eat freely; nor must the person who does not eat freely pass judgement on the one who does — because God has welcomed him. And who are you, to sit in judgement over somebody else’s servant? Whether he deserves to be upheld or to fall is for his own master to decide.

A conversation amongst #Kpop fans included this mention of the variety of fans and the importance of inclusivity and mutual respect in the fandom here on Mastodon - qualities sorely lacking in some other Kpop spaces.

Anyway, that part of the conversation reminded me of the history of inclusivity and mutual respect, which in turn set me thinking about religious "toleration" in early modern European history, which in turn reminded me of the Edict of Torda in the Transylvania of 1568:

I was going to finish there with a pronouncement of "There's a lot more to Transylvania than Dracula!" which is true, but, on reflection, a bad note on which to end because it sounds smug and condescending.

Yes, early modern history is fascinating, anybody who can visit Transylvania should do so, and "toleration" deserves much attention from both a historical and philosophical point of view - but shouldn't I be more alive to today's interest in vampirism and to goth subcultures ? Shouldn't I remember that, in the words of @pixelcats, "all ways of stanning are valid" and that includes the stanning of Transylvania too?

For many people—many of them well-read—modern life is not so much about (intellectual) #toleration as a sort of scientism which says that everything that’s not #science has to be excluded, or held under, you know.

But, then, people are free to believe what they like about God or whatever, that’s he’s good, that he’s bad/doesn’t exist, that he’s a girl, that he’s a scientist, that he’s a scientist-girl, that he’s a scientist-girl that’s bad and doesn’t exist, that he’s this and that, whatever you like.

After all, most people have something out there that they’re not ready for, and that includes me, and not just other people or people I don’t like.

From a very early age I knew I would never be the 'girl' next door. I was always somehow in the 'other' category. Women, non-conformist, immigrant or just not fitting into cliche gender and or other based expectations.

This is why I love #rock n roll and the #arts it's a place to meet my fellow #freaks and I hope this is a good place to do it. #Toleration and #respect, regardless of #gender, #race, #sexualorientation, #class, religion and funny and nice very welcome. 🖖

James Taaffe played a key role in the #Remonstrance affair (the Remonstrance was a controversial expression of loyalty towards #CharlesII drawn up by #PeterWalsh aimed at gaining #toleration for Catholics.)

Taaffe was sent to Ireland to restore unity to the Irish church by explicitly denouncing Walsh and his followers on the pope's behalf. He pretended he had powers from the Pope he did not have, and it all went downhill from there.

Toutefois, elle ne reste pas cantonnée à la religion comme institution. Il y a aussi du communautarisme économique, ou même alimentaire.
En somme, c'est une forme de rejet de l'autre comme différent pour rester entre soi.
