For nine years I've been active on #trustroots, an open source hospitality platform made by the people behind hitchwiki. I've spent the best times of my best years with this platform and oh has it been a wonderful time.

There's been an email newsletter today which I can only interpret as the end of trustroots. #Nostroots is taking over the platform and quoting its README:

"Nostr makes it easy to integrate bitcoin lightning, which may at some point be helpful to for example keep out spammers."

It’s disheartening to see a community platform like #Trustroots https://trustroots.org facing challenges with governance, with issues and tensions among its contributors https://github.com/trustroots-community/trustrots/issues?q= and here https://trustroots.community/ This situation is messy and underscores the importance of establishing healthy governance practices within community-driven projects to ensure their long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

The case of Trustroots alongside the earlier issue of #CouchSurfing are a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of traditional feudalistic #FOSS foundation/ #NGO models for open-source projects. These models may initially foster collaboration and innovation, but easily become susceptible to internal conflicts and power struggles over time.

The #OGB (Open Governance Body) is an alternative approach rooted in a grassroot and inclusive history and ethos. By embracing “producer” sortation, decentralized decision-making and community-led initiatives, projects like #OGB aim to avoid the pitfalls associated with hierarchical governance structures https://hamishcampbell.com/?s=OGB

I think it's a good example of what can happen to a nice community platform when there is not a healthy governance practise in place.

I was a contributor a while some time back and had hoped to support an effort to healthy governance, but left before that was possible.

Would love to see case studies of how the running of community platforms can sour, not just the happy stories...

thanks to #trustroots we camped @ kasper's property near #Aljezur. it was so lovely to share time with interesting and inspiring people that we stayed 5 days to chat, eat and help around the house. marc installed a kitchen sink in the shed and fiona mounted the water connection together with one of the other guests.

due some strong rain we realised that our #tent leaked. luckily we had a tube of seam grip glue with us. so we could glue the leaking areas.

Das wäre dann mein erstes Mal Couchsurfing, bzw Gartensurfing mit Zelt, - falls sich da mal was ergibt 😁

@ajunjahi Es gibt die #Opensource -Alternativen #Trustroots und #bewelcome. In wie weit couchers.org auch open source ist , weiss ich nicht. Toll sind auch #1nitetent im Sommer, um ein Zelt im Garten aufzubauen und #Warmshowers, um #Langstreckenradfahrer zu beherbergen.

@luce diese beiden habe ich nie genutzt, aber #Trustroots https://www.trustroots.org - im Verhältnis zu den anderen wahrscheinlich recht kleine aber sehr sehr freundliche Community und angenehme Seite. Für (Rad-)Wandernde sollen auch #WarmShowers und #WelcomeToMyGarden (leider bisher hauptsächlich Benelux) empehlenswert sein, habe aber bislang keine eigenen Erfahrungen.
