#OnThisDay—26 January 1863—John Treble opened a #TurkishBath at 4 Mansion Terrace, St David's Hill, #Exeter, opposite the 'Blind Asylum'. Though 'replete with every essential', it was actually 6 months before showers were fitted.
Joseph Ball became the owner in 1872, and the baths closed briefly in 1880 shortly after his death. His wife Anne then continued them until her death in 1891. The Turkish baths had 2 hot rooms, a cooling-room, a shampooing room, dressing room, and showers.

@HarrietRichardson @histodons For anyone wishing to find out more about the #TurkishBath at Lochhead Hydro mentioned in this interesting piece on hydros, there's an illustrated article at victorianturkishbath.org/_6DIR

Half-height portrait of a seated long-white-bearded "Dr" Munro wearing a suit.Vignette of "oriental-styled" Turkish baths building added to the Lochhead Hydro in Aberdeen. Shown are a long and a short wall, each with an arched colonnade. Over roughly two thirds of the area is an arched roof. On the other part is a dome topped by a cupola. Behind is the upper part of a decorated chimney from the boiler house. Around the building, at various corners, are eight pseudo-minaret-shaped spindly columns, each topped with a star and crescent. There are trees, bushes and gardeners tending the flower beds. A couple with a dog walk along a wide path in the foreground.

#OnThisDay—26 December 1860— less than six months after London's first Victorian #TurkishBath opened in Bell Street, near Marble Arch, fixture merchant William Turner set one up at 17 Goswell Road to be managed by his son-in-law Samuel Curry. (More info at victorianturkishbath.org/_6DIR.)
Small, but successful, it moved down the road to No.282 to expand and be closer to the centre, the following year. The larger baths remained open till just before World War II.

Advertisement from the Clerkenwell News of 9 January 1861 suggesting that the Turkish Bath is "a Preventative and Cure of Diseases" and "The Baths are furnished with everything requisite for the Bathers". They are open from 8 am to 5 pm at 2/- and from 6 to 8 pm at 1/-. After 14 January the baths will be open to ladies only on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 to 6 pm and from 6 to 8 pm at the same prices. The 11 minute walk between the first and second baths is shown on a cut from the modern online Google map.

@Liz The Victorian #TurkishBath was always hot dry air. There may also have been a separate vapour/steam/Russian bath provided as an additional facility—like the sitz bath or the hot and cold (water) baths— but this was not part of the Turkish bath process.
#histodons

A text reads:

Dr J L Thudichum, in an 1861 lecture at the Royal Society of Medicine, referred to the ancient Roman baths, on which, after their destruction and absence for hundreds of years, the new Victorian Turkish bath was modelled, saying:

The discovery that was lost and has been found again, is this, in the fewest possible words: The application of hot air to the human body. It is not wet air, nor moist air, nor vapoury air; it is not vapour in any shape or form whatever. It is an immersion of the whole body in hot common air.
