Here are some things that I am interested in that my kids have gotten curious about too:
- calisthenics. I enjoy doing things like pushups, pull-ups and squats. My kids will try to do them too.
- running. I like running and have done a 5k recently. I would jog while pushing the kids in a stroller. Now my older son will race me while I push my younger son in the stroller. We look like a bunch of maniacs, but it's fun!
- Mastodon. I will read different posts, and they will ask about the different people that they see. As you know, you can learn some obscure things here 😃.
- bird watching. I got back into it during the pandemic. The kids like doing the sound ID with the Merlin app.
- math. I really enjoy math. It comes up all the time. My older son has been enjoying finding situations where he can do division.

Some are more closely related to school subjects than other, but all involve learning.

I really like unschooling, because it meshes with my experience that kids are natural learners. But it can really throw people off; they say things like how will kids learn if they don't go to school? The unschooling approach is to first take the brakes off that are preventing learning. Things like forcing kids to learn topics on the school's schedule, grading, and limiting movement for good chunks of the day. These things can seem necessary and effective, but tend to limit self-motivated learning. And they are no fun! The more these pressures are lifted, kids have time to explore their own interests, which leads to rich learning.

With unschooling, there is still plenty for adults to do to help support kids with learning. We can express interest in whatever they find cool. We can help when they get stuck or something is more difficult than expected. And we can explore our own interests and share them with the kids. The kids will want to see what you're up to.

I understand why people approve of violent coercive social systems -- they benefit from them! But to deny the obvious fact that violence is required to keep the system working is so transparently self-delusion I'd think they'd be embarrassed to expose themselves.

A very good read from an unschooling parent as her oldest child leaves the nest.

I especially appreciate what she writes about how unschooling is "antisocial," but not in the way people think. Not that kiddo has no opportunities to be social, but that parents choosing to unschool feels like rejecting the rest of "normal" society.

"I did it... because I wanted to believe it was possible.... because ultimately, I wanted to believe we could build a better world, full stop. I wanted to believe...our strengths would carry us through, that if we had the time to lean into them, we would better be capable of imagining a better world and actually contributing to it. I wanted to believe that if we had the time to be curious about the world, we would love it all the more."

So in a bit of #SelfDirectedLearning that is simultaneously impressive and scary, my 11yo now knows how to:

- run a Windows 11 and a Kali Linux VM at the same time.

- use nmap (on the Linux VM) to scan the local network for machines with the Windows remote desktop port open

- use freerdp to access the Windows VM based on the nmap output.

In the process they've also internalised the idea that open ports on a public network are a risk.

(funny part in next toot)

It's not only for the twenties, but way before that. Going deep in exploration and experimentation is what we need from the moment we are born. But instead, we get to be constantly interrupted by other "important" things to do and learn, with the paroxxysm at school. "You want to dive into maths? Ok but now it's history lesson, you'll get on that later, if you overcome the frustration."

How can I support my son's interest in Roblox while keeping him safe and respecting my free and open source software (FOSS) values?

My older son (7 years old) is currently interested in Roblox. I believe in supporting our kids interests, (a core unschooling idea) so I have started exploring it with him. We played Grow-A-Garden and watched videos of people playing Steal-A-Brainrot. I see how the games can be fun, but I also see what look like anti-patterns to me. For instance intermittent rewards to trigger compulsive playing.

Roblox doesn't look great from a FOSS perspective too. It is proprietary (as far as I can tell), centralized, and run by a for-profit-company. It doesn't natively run on Linux. I am torn because I want to find a way that he can play but I don't want to entangle myself in more proprietary code.

"I come to SDE partly from that perspective but even more from the perspective of evolutionary biology. I see imposed education as not only morally wrong but ineffective because it ignores and overrides children’s biologically natural ways of educating themselves and, in many, develops a distaste for learning that can interfere with a child’s natural zest for life and the learning that comes with life."

"Proponents of SDE come to it from various perspectives. Many come from a perspective focusing on democratic values. Imposed education always involves a violation of what most democratic thinkers regard as basic human rights – the rights of self-determination, free assembly and free speech, among others. If children can become well educated without coercion, then it would seem to be immoral to subject them to coercive methods."

Sag mal,
@larsweisbrod ,
könntest du die
@pollatschek
mal in einen Schulbus stecken
[de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busing,

und an die Geschwister-Scholl-Schule hier oben auf dem Idiotenhügel
(Tübingen-Waldhäuser-Ost und Forschungszentren)
karren,
damit die Florian Nuxoll et al.
den Pädagogischen Zeigefinger mal gründlich austreibt?
[vgl. bitbucket.org/cmucsd/sudelbuec]
