Operating Superstars — First character articles and overworld “sprites”

The first character articles have been added to the project #Wiki! I don’t have the cast page up yet, but I listed them at the bottom of the main page:

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Something that had been holding me back from publishing character articles was not having up-to-date full-body images for all of the characters I have a lot to write about.

However, an idea suddenly came to mind that fits the MMO-inspired theme of Techlandia, and lets me repurpose the chibi-style images I used to introduce characters with dialogue through blog posts during Version 2; overworld “sprites” of the characters!

These are the first three I made of two story protagonists (Damien and Marcia) and the deuteragonist of one (Juna). These “sprites” were fairly easy to make since this is all #VectorArt. I adapted them from the images I used during Version 2 to have a top-down perspective, which is inspired by the overworld sprites in some RPGs.

When more characters are introduced across teams, I’d feel ready to sort them by team. Since some teams went defunct by the “present”, I’d sort characters by the team they debuted.

I finally finished colouring in my earlier drawing of four different poses of my griffon, Gibson. Enjoy.

Four different poses of Gibson the Griffon, depicting him standing sideways while looking at the viewer, floating in the air while thinking and looking up, standing with a shocked expression on his face while his down and fur are standing on end, and flexing with his left talon over his right bicep while he's wearing a red speedo.

Nine Objects

I’ve been loving Suzanne Vega’s music since her very first album back in 1985. A friend played it for us at a house party, and it landed very well with us all. Thanks Jan!

This is the album cover for her 1996 release. It opens with the powerful “Birthday” about giving birth to her daughter Ruby, and contains a lot of great tracks. It is one of my favourite albums of hers.

I can’t believe it’s been 19 years already!

I have been feeling pretty uninspired to draw lately, so I drew one of my favorite OCs. 🎨

Weather Report

Domino Theory, 1984

What a ride… The span of Weather Report’s sprawling catalog is really wide. The band’s composition has had so many great artists in their lineup in addition to founders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Schooled in jazz among leaders like Maynard Ferguson, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis – Weather Report became their next big thing.

Personal preference of course, but I do like the albums “Heavy Weather”, “Procession”, “Sportin’ Life” and their final “This Is This” the best. Possibly the ones with a little more traditional structure?

Notable members and guest artists include

  • Jaco Pastorius, bass
  • Victor Bailey, bass
  • Alphonso Johnson, bass
  • Miroslav Vitouš, bass
  • Omar Hakim, drums
  • Peter Erskine, drums
  • Steve Gadd, drums
  • Narada Michael Walden, drums
  • Don Alias, percussion and drums
  • Carlos Santana, guitar

I had the pleasure to catch Wayne Shorter live once, and managed to get this shot from the performance in Stockholm on June 10th, 2010.

EBTG

Everything but the Girl is a Brittish duo consisting of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. I’m not usually one for melancholy music, but for EBTG I am happily making an exception. Tracey’s lyrics are good to fantastic, her voice adds to the story by inflicting emotion way beyond the words. The stories are carried by Ben’s superb melodies, instrumentation and production. From early steps in 1984 to massive, worldwide success during the 1990s, I can warmly recommend their entire catalog.

EBTG 💞

You might have missed their 2023 release “Fuse”, be sure to check that out too.

Here’s a portrait I did of Tracey. Her lyrics and stories are right up there with Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega. IMHO.

Snarky Puppy

Album cover

Yet another album cover, drawn in Affinity Designer. A weird and wonderful group of insanely talented musicians and instrumentalists. Jazz fusion, perhaps? It is hard to put them in a strict category, but they’re never boring. So many people on stage, it’s crazy.

Woof!

They have the cutest mascot in their logotype too 🐶

Here’s two photos from their Stockholm concert November 3rd 2022.

Factory Records

There are a few record labels that consistently release so much great material that you start noticing. Factory is obviously one, and I also have fond memories of Mute, 4AD and ZTT from back in the day. It always starts with the music, but having strong management with a vision support the bands really can make a difference. Here are three classic covers, originally created by Peter Saville for New Order, re-drawn here using Affinity Designer.

Design by Peter Saville

Uncertain what typeface this is, definitely a modernist geometric, and possibly drawn for this cover?

Blue Monday, Fact 73

This is probably the biggest hit New Order ever had, epic dancefloor banger “Blue Monday”. The outer sleeve had cut-outs to resemble a floppy disk and was a very expensive cover to print and produce. The coloured bar to the right is a code that spells out the track names, the FAC 73 serial number and the band name. It was rumoured that the label lost money on each record sold, but this is probably an exaggerated claim. Why destroy a perfecly good story with the truth, eh?

NEW ORDER / CONFUSION

Naturally this is FACT 93 and depending on how you squint, the colour bar reads either “New Order” or “Confusion”.

Mobil Avenue

This image reflects a current predicament in my professional carreer. I’m just SO stuck. I’ll blame the market, but it’s hard to remain optimistic. Mobil Avenue is the Matrix’ version of “limbo” and even Neo needed help getting out of there…

Bah.

Here’s a version without Neo that I’ll be using as my video conferencing background.
