#ScribesAndMakers 17 Mar: What's your favourite book about writing, or your other craft?

Elements of Fiction by Walter Mosley. Such a rare, valuable insight on the topic, amazing book and author.

"We talked about her eyes for a half hour. And then he started to tell me things that men should never say about their women. Not sex, but he talked about how she'd hold him to her breast when he was afraid and how she'd stand up for him when a shopkeeper or waiter tried to walk over him."

I can't believe #waltermosley invented the "Excuse me, he asked for no pickles" woman.

Enjoyed & completed: "The Awkward Black Man: Stories (2020) by Walter Mosley

ALT TEXT: Quote from Down the River Unto the Sea curated by Readwise. Black letters against a tan background. Small snippet of book cover which depicts a black and white photo of a man standing at the rail of a bridge with his back to the camera.

The quote is, "Monk always had a good group of talented musicians with him, but while they play deep melodies, he was the madman in the corner pounding out the truth between the fabrications of rhythm and blues." Down the River Unto the Sea by Walter Mosley.

Though this is a fictional book, "Monk" refers to real life American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk.

From NPR, "Monk, who was born 100 years ago today (written October 10, 2017) was also one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The late pianist wrote about 70 songs during his career — many of which have became standards, including the most recorded jazz composition of all time, "'Round Midnight."

#WalterMosley is one of my favorite authors and certainly my favorite living author. His latest book Every Man A King is a follow up to Down the River Unto the Sea, both apart of his new King Oliver mysteries.

In any case, the audiobooks are masterfully narrated by Dion Graham and just absolutely enjoyable.

You can find many great books and audiobooks via your local public library and listen at your leisure. Two of the most popular apps are
#Libby and #Hoopla .

Libby provides e-books and audiobooks, and Hoopla delivers "audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines, or music everywhere you have a screen"

https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby

https://www.hoopladigital.com

The federal government has conveniently set up a website to help you search for your local library:
https://www.usa.gov/libraries and https://www.careeronestop.org/LocalHelp/CommunityServices/find-libraries.aspx

Or you can just search for "Public Library + Your City or County and State"

I am typing all of this out real slow
Riley Freeman style because people are busy and tired and sometimes forget that we have these resources at our fingertips.

Also because this is what the Republicans, third party candidates and those telling you NOT to vote want to take away from all of us.

E-books, audiobooks, movies, music and TV series available at your local public library for you, your children, your siblings, your elders and your friends,
free of charge and best of all, no late charges because the content is returned automatically on the due date.

We all know this, but sometimes we get tired and we forget.

In any case, you can pop over to
#FOSS @omnivore@pkm.social https://omnivore.app , start a free account and save any of these links as bookmarks to review at your leisure.

Your public library has some real treasures. I'm an avid #WalterMosley fan and when I'd read most of his fiction, I started reading suburban thrillers, cozy mysteries and now kind of less illustrious detectives.

Why is this book [and most of the
#Shetland books as well as the Two Rivers series] my spirit animal? 🥹 I think I'm an Ann Cleeves fan.

Unfortunately, I'm almost to the end of the Shetland book series, so I guess I'll start on Vera next.

Still haven't seen any of the corresponding TV shows.

Read Walter Mosely’s DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS and was so struck by this paragraph, which perfectly encapsulates so much of noir - you get the thing or the woman you’ve always dreamed of and instead of making your life better, it makes your life hell.

But being on the bottom didn’t feel so bad if you could come to John’s now and then and remember how it felt back home in Texas, dreaming about California. Sitting there and drinking John’s scotch you could remember the dreams you once had and, for a while, it felt like you had them for real.

"The Thief" (1995)
by Walter Mosley

Ex-convict Socrates is having dinner at Iula's Diner when a younger man, Wilfred, arrives, flashing a large amount of cash. Wilfred brags about his lifestyle as he and Socrates debate his methods, and who is really paying for his actions.

Mosley explores pride and shame, right and wrong, in a story that Esquire describes as an "edgy philosophical throw-down."

Accompanying illustration to "The Thief," from Esquire magazine, July 1995. Illustrated by John Collier, it depicts a Black woman in the center, wearing a white and blue chef's coat, standing behind a diner counter with one hand on her hip and the other holding a coffee pot. In the foreground, a Black man in a yellow shirt sits at the end of the counter, with his back to the view. At the opposite end, in the background, sits a Black man with a receding hairline and moustache, wearing a green shirt.

love this:

“But Mosley said the best part of his conversation with the Times was when he told the interviewer that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, who wrote for Marvel and DC Comics, “are Jewish writers and they’re much more important” than Bellow and Roth.”

(for the record I love Henderson The Rain King and Sabbath’s Theater just as much as I love This Man, This Monster. Need it allllll.)

Cool article on a great writer
"He is published in 24 countries. Yet he bridles at the persistent "crime writer" tag. Besides his Easy Rawlins and Fearless Jones mysteries, he has created a ghetto philosopher, Socrates Fortlow, a "blues novel", science fiction and a "non-aligned attack on capitalism", Workin' On the Chain Gang (2000). He also writes for theatre and film."

'I was struggling to update my corkboard when I read this exquisitely pulpy line: “Lawler was a New York blue blood who married a nouveau riche nobody named Constantine Psomas — a.k.a. the can man.” Warmth filled my guts like whiskey. I didn’t need a map. Mosley was driving me to Rikers in a cream-colored Bianchina, and Mingus was playing on the stereo. I was along for the ride.'
