The Israeli military’s widespread use of white phosphorous munitions in its cross-border attacks on southern Lebanon is placing civilians at grave risk, and adding to the further displacement of local people, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said.
In a new report, the New York-based global rights group said it had documented the use of white phosphorous by Israel in attacks on at least 17 municipalities in southern Lebanon since October 2023.
Yesterday I joined a protest in #StLouis about #WhitePhosphorous. A chemical weapon, which kills and maims by chemical burn. White Phosphorous is produced by #Monsanto (headquartered here in STL), sold to #ICL (which also operates out of STL), and then sold by ICL to several militaries, including the US and IDF.
In many ways it can feel like these wars are solely the decisions of far away politicians, happening in far away places, to far away people. But the machine is also here at home.
The #whitephosphorous dropped on Lebanon, Baalbaki believes, remains active, very toxic and flammable for much longer than information on the topic indicates.
He joins a chorus of Lebanese researchers and experts warning that Israel’s tactics are causing long-term and potentially irreversible damage to south Lebanon’s environment, agriculture and economy, potentially making it uninhabitable.
