I was hiking a #Hiking a few days back. It was cold outside and the snow was fresh and thick. Now it’s started to melt again.

After that follows the endless open landscape and finally, the Swiss Alps.

Today’s small moment — a winter pause near the Otter Creek Dam, where the water holds quiet reflections and the stillness along the Blue Ridge Parkway reminds me how important it is to slow down and let a little peacefulness sink in.

What you tend quietly today becomes strength tomorrow.

Much of the real work of growth isn’t loud. It's quiet mainly. It's the cultivation of small choices made throughout the day, almost unnoticed by anyone else.

These are the seeds that become strength in the days ahead.

Renewal begins with what we’re willing to tend today.

It’s the start of winter, and for the first time in a long while, I’m really feeling the cold. I’ve been wearing a cardigan inside, which is unusual for me. There’s something almost grounding about it, though. Maybe it means I’m finally beginning to feel my body more clearly. That in itself feels like quiet progress.

Church today went OK. Rehearsals are still somewhat difficult. I haven’t quite settled back into that rhythm. Once the service begins, though, something shifts. Things tend to flow better, and I can let my voice come through without holding back. My top notes aren’t fully back to where they were before the bout of tonsillitis a few weeks ago, but they’re getting there slowly.

Someone is visiting later, and I’m impatient for the time to pass. Waiting has never been my strength, especially when the day feels stretched thin.

Next week looks more or less the same. I have exercise scheduled for Monday and Thursday, and support appointments on Tuesday and Saturday. Study threads through the gaps. Two online classes this trimester, focused on models of counselling and ethics in the counselling profession.

If I’m honest, the routine is getting a bit monotonous, especially the exercise side of things. Still, repetition isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it’s what keeps everything else from unravelling.

Winter Moments

In the winter, when the days are short and the nights long, it’s easy for anyone to feel a bit lonely, especially during the holiday season. This time of year, even during celebrations, one can fall into a quiet introspection.

There’s something special about this quieter time. It’s an opportunity for personal reflection, much like nature itself in winter. This season encourages us to slow down, think about where we are, and where we’re heading.

One way I find comfort and perspective during these moments is to pay attention to the beauty of the world around us big or small. For instance, the intricate patterns of ice up close. It’s incredible how something so simple can reveal such complex designs and artistry. The delicate details in ice crystals can be a gentle reminder of the beauty of life.

While the holidays are happening around you, remember to take a moment for yourself, I’ve taken a bunch of moments just to reset. Look at the beauty big or small of the world. It’s a way to connect with the here and now, to find calm and in the peace of nature. This can be a source of strength and energy. Sometimes we just need that reminder that sunnier days are ahead.
