As a result of changes in the 2025 #WorldPressFreedomIndex released yesterday I have updated which news sources are used for publicnews.world

#Seychelles Press Freedom Index score fell from 73.75 in 2024 to 68.56 in 2025 moving it's ranking from 37th to 45th and pushing it's classification from "satisfactory" to "problematic". #SeychellesBroadcastingCorporation (#SBC) has been removed as a news source.

"Although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of #PressFreedom, economic pressure is also a major, more insidious problem. The economic indicator on the #RSF #WorldPressFreedomIndex now stands at an unprecedented, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index."

As a result of changes in the 2024 #WorldPressFreedomIndex released last month I have updated which news sources are used for publicnews.world 🧵

"#PressFreedom around the world is being threatened by the very people who should be its guarantors – political authorities. This is clear from the latest annual #WorldPressFreedomIndex produced by #ReportersWithoutBorders (#RSF). This finding is based on the fact that, of the five indicators used to compile the ranking, it is the political indicator that has fallen most, registering a global average fall of 7.6 points."

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 8️⃣: #Africa 🌍

I decided to try something new and create my very first #bivariate #choropleth map! The two variables I’ve mapped for 52 African countries are the 2023 #WorldPressFreedomIndex scores by #ReportersWithoutBorders and the 2022 #HumanDevelopmentIndex by the UN Development Programme.

Unfortunately São Tomé and Príncipe didn’t have a WPFI score while there’s no HDI for Somalia. Of course Western Sahara had no data too.

Bivariate choropleth map of Africa showing the 2023 World Press Freedom Index against the 2022 Human Development Index. Countries like South Africa have high scores for both while those like Eritrea are among the lowest. Egypt has a high HDI but low press freedom while Namibia has mid HDI with high press freedom.

2023 World Press Freedom Index – journalism threatened by fake content industry
rsf.org/en/2023-world-press-fr

The 21st edition of the #WorldPressFreedomIndex, compiled annually by Reporters Without Borders (#RSF), sheds light on major and often radical changes linked to political, social and technological upheavals.

——— ⁂ ————

There are changes at the bottom of the Index, too. The last three places are occupied solely by Asian countries: #Vietnam (178th), which has almost completed its hunt of independent reporters and commentators; #China (down 4 at 179th), the world’s biggest jailer of journalists and one of the biggest exporters of propaganda content; and, to no great surprise, #NorthKorea (180th).

#ReportersWithoutBorders has released the 2023 World #PressFreedom Index with the subtitle "journalism threatened by fake content industry": rsf.org/en/2023-world-press-fr

The #Philippines 🇵🇭 jumped up 15 places to 132nd out of 180 countries and slightly improved its score from 41.84 to 46.21 mostly due to increases in the economic and security indicators. There were very small decreases in the remaining 3 indicators: political, legislative, and social.

Greece remains stuck at the bottom of the #worldpressfreedomindex of RSF in the EU and got upgraded from the 108th to the 107th position globally.

The surveillance and wiretapping of Greek journalists by the National Intelligence Agency and the illegal Predator software is considered the biggest violation of #pressfreedom in the EU. The government has only tried to cover up the scandal despite multiple warnings from EU’s PEGA and JURI committees.

Yesterday was #WorldPressFreedomDay. So I consulted the #worldpressfreedomindex for 2021. Overall the situation for #journalists all over the world got worse. Where, for years Western countries were regarded as beacons for #FreeSpeach that is in a lot of cases no longer true. In my view, this was to be expected. However Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland and Finland are holding the ford for now. Costa Rica is the odd one out, but must be applauded!
Belgian tumbled to 22 in the ranking and The Netherlands even to 28. The US is to be found at place 42. Canada is doing a better job at number 19.
For #Belgium and the #Netherlands, the reasons are similar. Most media are owned by only 2 groups: Roularta and DPG - media. Local media and other smaller media outlets either struggle to survive or disappear. In both countries journalists have increasingly been subjected to increased violence by trolls, violent protests and personal attacks. In the #Netherlands Peter. R. De Vries was murdered. Also the spread of fake news compromised decent #journalism ! #rsf.org
