Red Horsechestnut (Aesculus x carnea), is a hybrid between the larger Eurasian A. hippocastanum and the smaller American species A. pavia. This hybrid originated in Europe sometime in the early 1800s.

Horse Chestnut bud-break.

(ish)

Thumb-sized bud of a horse chestnut starting to break. The bud had sticky, waxy brown scales and the new leaves, which are flushed pink, are just starting to break from the tip

Random question but does anyone know when to collect seeds from red buckeye, (Aesculus pavia)? There's a ton of seed pods / fruits growing on them, but I'm not sure at what point they'll start falling...or what they'll even look like on the inside lol, like is it one seed? a bunch? I've got no clue!

Edit: I found a youtube video! It's just one giant seed

I am shaken to learn that four species of #Buckeye #Trees in eastern North America are not even close to monophyletic. This raises so many questions! The size range is absurd — the smallest “Painted” are 6’ / 2 m and the largest “Yellow” are 177’ / 54’ — so is the gigantism limited to one clade or did it evolve multiple times? How does this line up with geography? #Aesculus #Phylogeny

Color coded! Yellow for Yellow Buckeye, red for Red, and then blue for Painted and green for Ohio.My own Buckeye specimen. Purportedly a “Yellow”…

Wind blew off some new growth on the yellow buckeye tree (Aesculus flava) in my front yard, and I thought I would share photos to show how large the leaves are. The tape measure is in inches (15 in = 38.1 cm).

A large, palmately compounded five-section leaf of a yellow buckeye tree (Aesculus flava) rests on a concrete walk with a tape measure in inches above it to show the width of the leaf is more than 15 inches/41 centimetres). The green leaf was blown off the tree due to high winds in spring weather.Palmately compounded five-section leaves from new growth on a yellow buckeye tree (Aesculus flava) rest on a concrete walk.
