Scientists got all excited thinking they'd discovered a new pulsar, but plot twist: it was just NASA's Relay 2 satellite from 1967 having one last cosmic tantrum! 🛰️

Even 57-year-old space junk can still surprise us with mysterious radio bursts. Who knew dead satellites were such drama queens?

“This work describes the developed index, which is defined as a risk indicator following the formulation of the Environmental Consequences of Orbital Breakups (ECOB) index. Further development became necessary mainly due to a change in the population orbiting the Earth. The introduction of a large constellation led to a rapid increase in the number of objects, while also highlighting some critical aspects and limitations of the original formulation.”

Near miss by 75 meters!

vsamsondc.bsky.social @vsamsondc.bsky.social
Wild story out of COPUOS yesterday - a miss by 75m @

Sangwoo SHIN

Remarks by the UNOOSA Secretary General at the UNCOPUOS plenary session
Yesterday. Center... Over the weekend, the United Nations Aerospace Secretariat
(UNOOSA) received an emergency conjunction warning from Malaysia of a
Malaysian satellite and a DPRK satellite. The possibility of a collision was within 24 hours, and the Malaysian satellite was unable to perform an evasive maneuver.
UNOOSA received the request and communicated the situation to the countries concerned, with the cooperation of orbital epidemiology experts from the Space Data Association and Digantara, a space situational awareness (SSA) company.
Experts have advised changing the attitude of the satellites to minimize the risk of collisions. Normally, the satellite operator performs a collision avoidance maneuver when another object approaches within 5 kilometers, but in this case, it was only 75 meters away. In the end, the North Korean satellite operator performed the maneuver and the collision was avoided. The end.

Brussels moves to tackle satellite junk in space.

The European Commission on Wednesday proposed a new Space Act that seeks to dial up regulatory oversight of satellite operators — including requiring them to tackle their impact on space debris and pollution, or face significant fines.

It’s ‘starting to look like a jungle up there.’

It's also the sort of business that I feel like any state foreign intelligence service ought to be willing to fund. Just in case something they regarded as not being useful to them in space needed to be de-orbited in a responsible and timely manner. I feel like we should try to persuade the band to capitalise on that... 🤪

Regardless, astronomers of the world will be willing to give Space Junk Removal Service a listen ❤️

#SpaceX #starship - the film trailer: youtube.com/watch?v=tiD8nGD0Q6w ... It's a little bit old but still explodes successfully! 😂

The #climate, the #environment, #nature and the taxpayers say thanks to the #billionaire. #sarcasmalarm
And you need much sarcasm reading the fanboys' comments who have no historic knowledge about how much better rockets once were (I watched the first moon landing live).

"'Generally speaking, this is not good for anyone who wants to continue to receive benefits from the use of space. Pieces of debris at that altitude will stick around for years, if not decades. Leaving those rocket bodies at 700-800 km altitude is incredibly irresponsible. China is just beginning to launch its very large constellations so there is time to fix this before it becomes a grave danger.'”

#SpaceX's "four-page letter lists the alleged flaws with AST's paperwork, concluding that its 'orbital debris mitigation plan fails to demonstrate that the FM1 satellite can operate safely and sustainably.' The same document also faults the application for failing to provide more details on how the company will prevent its satellite from disrupting #astronomy, even though AST recently reached a deal with the US National Science Foundation."

SMART 1 / crash site

Replica of a work by the painter Donato Creti (1671-1749) from the series ‘Astronomical Observations’ (1711), which was commissioned by the artist - painted and minimally altered by a copyist. The copyist added a small shadow to the depiction of the moon that refers to the crash site of the lunar probe SMART 1 (ESA), which was deliberately destroyed in 2006 after a mission lasting several years. The outlines are based on a photograph taken by NASA's lunar probe ‘Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’, which captured the crash site.

The work was realized in the frame of an Artist-in-Science Residency at European Space Agency - ESA / ESOC in Darmstadt in 2022, hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt e.V..

Two men can be seen standing on a wooded hill and observing the moon. The full moon is above them on the right. One of the men is looking at the moon through a telescope, the other is sitting on the ground in front of a spread-out map and looking at the man with the telescope. The men are wearing colourful robes, as was common in the 17th century. A small black spot can be seen in the moon. The work was created as an oil on canvas painting, the frame is a golden frame. You can see a blurred black and white image on which the rough outline of the moon's surface can be guessed. Different sized round moon crater outlines can be recognised. In the upper part of the image, an outline reminiscent of the shape of the letter ‘T’ can be seen - the outline of the crashed Smart 1 lunar probe.

From a @LiveScience op-ed by @sundogplanets: "#LEO is a valuable resource that must be protected and shared in a way that benefits the most people while simultaneously protecting LEO for use by future generations. We cannot have tens of thousands of #satellites in LEO without severe consequences for the atmosphere and an increasingly high likelihood of #KesslerSyndrome, which will limit our use of satellites for decades to centuries."

@andytiedye European #ESA is developping something like this: esa.int/Space_Safety/Space_Deb but it's still a project for the future.

Also some private companies make experiments like this: smithsonianmag.com/science-nat but you know the promises of all the "cleaners" for plastic pollution on earth that never worked.
