Dutch government is planning to pay climate lawsuit penalties using the so called 'climate fund'.

It's an interesting finding by investigative journalists firstly since the climate fund is meant for investments to actually achieve the climate goals. Secondly since the government publicly denies it could face penalties for not achieving the goals, but government employees are actually fearing and preparing for them.

Very cute pictures accompanied by a sad story: hedgehog rescue centers are overflowing this year in the Netherlands, and hedgehogs are weaker than other years. Not surprising: this year was a very bad year for insects, the main dish for hedgehogs.

Over the last 50 years the Dutch hedgehog population has decreased by 80%, just like the insect population. Putting more endemic species in your garden can help them.

1 in 5 European bee species threatened with extinction, according to new International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) report. Likewise butterflies are not doing great with 15% of European species threatening to go extinct.

Main reason: habitat loss due to intensive farming and pesticides.

Researchers warn that if the number of bees and butterflies go down even further, it might impact food production.

The Netherlands lowers their goal of using less raw materials. The original idea was to use 50% less resources in 2030 compared to 2016. Now the plan is to use 15% less resources... in 2035.

Still the government thinks to be able to reach a full circular economy by 2050. The PBL, a government organization analyzing governmental plans, does not agree, especially since the plans lack concrete actions.

Mix of 37 pesticides detected on Dutch island in nature reserve that is 7km from the shore. Up to 3/4 of the detected pesticides is coming from agriculture and has traveled to the island through evaporation or as droplets.

The finding is worrisome since cocktails of pesticides are linked to the disappearance of species, and this proves that pesticides cannot be contained to the area where they are applied.

The is threatening with sanctions to UN members that will back the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) its plans to reduce ocean shipping's greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change makes fires in nature 40 times more likely in Spain and Portugal. One of the causes are intense heatwaves. Without climate change those would happen every 2500 years, with the current warming they happen every 13 years.

There is a trend of lawlessness in the Netherlands where good laws are created, but the organizations enforcing them lack funds, manpower and the will to be effective... on purpose.

The story below is one of many: a piece of forest is illegally cleared and the enforcing organizations are condoning it, even when citizens ask for enforcement. Similarly many companies dump toxic waste with expired permits, polluting the environment.

Every year at least 28.000 people die from deforestation. The actual numbers are probably higher since the study does not account for deaths due to the CO2 released by deforestation.

After China, Europe is the main driver for global trade that causes deforestation. In Europe, Dutch consumption is especially bad, causing more than 3 times the European average of deforestation in the past 12 years.

Last year the global energy need rose with 2.2%, nearly double the rate as the average of the past 10 years of 1.3%. Reason? airconditioning!

Even the Netherlands are picking up with the trend having record airconditioning sales for this year and 2.2 million households owning one. We have a staggering amount of 2-8 days above 30C° every year.

Isolating the house, and adding sun protection outside also help relieve heat stress.

Already looking forward to the Hollywood blockbuster coming out in 2 or 3 years about 'the guy' predicting the AI crash.

Unfortunately it will be an expensive one costing millions their job, house, pension and more. It also will have set us back years in climate action. Why? Because society including our leaders went all-in on this one, because they've mistaken a plausible sentence/image generator for the solution to everything.

The has a 'new' strategy to spend less money on climate change goals. The new 'competitiveness fund', part of the long term budget for 2028-2034, is meant for both industry and sustainability goals. However... it is not clearly specified how much should go to sustainability, leaving the door open to spend most of it on industry targets.

Let's see how prioritizing short term gains over having a planet to live on works out...

The Netherlands have nearly halved their sea wind energy target for 2040. Instead of the planned 50GW they will now aim for 30GW. Now the Netherlands have 4.7GW of sea wind energy deployed.

The minister says it does not want to pay for investments that are not used, since the demand for renewable energy is low. Opponents, including the industry, think this will stop investments to convert to green energy.

At the same time Emmanuel Macron wants to take the time to discuss the emission goals for 2040 in order to make them pliable for the competitive power of the .
