Bridge
A thread

i.

I walk where pillars cool the air,
where sunlight seeps as aging gold.
Above, peaked arches, pair on pair,
repeat their curves like tales retold.

They stand, a bridge that’s hewn of stone,
narthex to apses, then to now.
Each span leads on to altar throne
with gilded sconces on its brow.

Bride

Medieval place
with peaked windows
to split the dark
with heaven’s glow —

proud bishop’s tomb
in sandstone wall
of Gothic womb
in which light falls

through tall glass panes.
Of his long rule,
all that remains
is minuscule,

just his long name
in gold inscribed:
once wed to fame,
but fame’s no bride.

Better place
A thread

i.

I cross the cloister’s quiet square
where miters sleep beneath the sod.
Inscriptions worn by patient air
yet held in place by claiming God.

I walk the path of broken slate
where grass plucks cracks between flagstones.
Cathedral breathes as dusk comes late
tonight. I keep my vows, alone.

17. Dome

🧠 I wanted to focus on the detail of the dome, with the cathedral adding some background colour.

⭐I think the detail came up well .

➡️ Maybe more blue sky in the background would have made for more balanced colour.

Ripon Cathedral.
This post is for those of you who haven't been to the cathedral and currently are outside of UK.
If one day you are in England....

Past the gate
A thread

i.

Beneath the saints’ carved, watchful gaze,
I pause at gilt ironwork’s curled vine.
A veil, a hush: my darker days
are drawn a cleaner, calmer line.

A lady — known, not named — sits here,
blue-shaded in a candle’s glow,
not judging me, but making clear
that mercy doesn’t need a show.

16. Holy Smoke!

🧠 When I saw this statue in the Necropolis, I knew I wanted to get a shot of her looking over the city. I didn't notice till after that the long cloud level with her face looks like smoke coming out of her mouth!

⭐I like how much detail I've got in the subject compared to other shoots with my new camera. I feel I'm getting the hang of settings better and not just letting ISO go on auto and get cranked right up!

➡️ I feel some of the background looks shaky as well as blurred but I'm not sure.

Sacred forest

Tall Gothic columns
sprout, stone trees
raise their arched branches
in the century breeze,

offering cool shade
from guilt’s glaring sun
’til my weeping heart’s sweat
pools in swift river and runs.

Eye of the needle

Up in high niche
in cathedral nook
a queen’s statue
with stony look.

From her tight perch
she glowers down
at passersby,
disdainful, crowned.

That pious pose
commemorates
a modest gift
from vast estates —

to prove that she
was Christian too.
But that dour mouth?
The sculptor knew.

Good and evil
A thread

i.

There are nine empty niches
on DC’s Gothic cathedral.
Let us pray, hold onto wishes
they won’t be filled by further evil.

Eight martyrs more — still unnamed saints —
to join a good mother in her car
who turned a wheel, to flee, not feint,
three icy bullets, au revoir.
