Today at #ALTA47, it was a pleasure being on a panel about using CAT software in literary translation, along with three panelists who were fantastic at explaining this tech clearly: (L to R) Viktorija Bilić, Shelley Fairweather-Vega, & Lola Rogers.

I spoke about using CafeTran Espresso under Linux, how concordance searching is a big help for literary translators, and about using CAT tools to translate from right-to-left into left-to-right languages.

I'm getting ready to go to the American Literary Translators Association conference in Milwaukee. I'm looking forward to the "Cold Beers, Cold Readings" event, with performances of scenes from recently translated stage plays. (I'm bringing a scene from my English translation of "In It for the Dough.") I'll also be on a panel about using CAT software in literary translation.

nothing like changing your segmentation rules and f ing up your entire translation.

(will it help me in the long run? yes. did it generate dozens of orphan segments that I now have to go in and fix manually? also yes. (T_T) )

Any translators out there with an opinion on QA Distiller? One of my clients is trying to enforce its use as a replacement for the Trados QA tool.

I hope this is being done in the interests of quality, which as a patent translator I am very serious about (in any case, any good translator is serious about this stuff). But hilariously they've chosen to package this announcement with an attempt to groom us for having our rates chiselled down in the coming year so I am suspicious. They are, of course, using the existence of "AI" as the fear mongering tool it was always designed to be.

Unfortunately for them they have also been offering me more work than ever lately, most of which I don't need, so they can royally fuck off with that shit. If they try to make me perform extra meaningless pseudo-quality procedures for less money, I will be forced to remind them that you can't spell "quality" without "quit".

So far I have read that QA Distiller is less good than Verifika, and this is the free version we are talking about , but I wouldn't be gobsmacked if it was still better than Trados.

Next week I'll speak at the BP Winter Translation Forum '23.
It's a hybrid event and I'll be presenting online.

A pet peeve turned into a lecture, and I got to play with algorithms and math to prepare this.

Heads-up for the #memoQ users in the fediverse: due to unforeseen circumstances (someone insisting on paying for a free resource and wanting a bunch of #translation and #localization workflow-related instruction), I've decided to simplify my life by doing a special three-month course on certain memoQ resources and how to get the most out of them. With lots of pre-configured, immediately usable and adaptable MQRES and other files and full instructions in text and video for what you can do with them. For many language pairs.

I'm planning to retire before long, so this is also a way of figuring out what to do with the hundreds (thousands??) of resources I have created for friends, colleagues and clients over the past 14 years. So watch this space/thread for details since "NIH syndrome" or somesuch seems to stand in the way of these finding a home with the tool provider.

Revolutionizing revolution itself

In a previous blog, we already spoke about Term Modifications, a nifty feature that allows Cattitude to “intercept” machine translations and search and replace certain words or phrases that for some reason keep giving the wrong results.

For example, if you’ve been translating a text on birds for a while, chances are your machine translation engine...
