TBH, #PumplessLiquidCooling isn't new.

  • I know folks who worked 35+ years in #MaterialScience and they could design that.

#Noctua's innovation is turn something from a #lab product that costs thousands of Euros in personnel hours design & setup into a consumer-ready product that doesn't require a #Hazmat-Suit - trained #chemist nor industrial- or A/C plumber to get started and that is "reasonable" to sell...

  • And for that I'll give them credit once it hits [virtual] store shelves...

Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino block print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.

Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n

Linocut print of Perkins in grey, a suited, bearded Victorian, at a wooden lab bench covered in glassware and chemical apparatus. He holds a flask at eye level with bright mauve fluid. Wide bright mauve lines radiate outward from it in the background.

For #BlackHistoryMonth pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for women & Black scientists.

Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later. 🧵1/n

Happy birthday to Russian #chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) who published the periodic table. Born in Siberia, the youngest child of a large family, his father was a school principal until he lost his sight & job. His mother then restarted her family’s abandoned glass factory to support them. His father died & factory was destroyed by fire. Despite economic hardship, 13 year old Mendeleev attended the Gynasium in Tobolsk. 🧵

My linocut of Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev from shoulders up in a gradient of bright mint green at the bottom through navy to darkest blue-black at the top. He wears a suit with bow tie and a heavy bushy beard. The shape of the modern periodic table is carved into his chest as blank squares, and the elements he knew are indicated by their symbols. Those he included but not quite in the right place (because contemporary observations were still inconclusive) are indicated in pink). The blank squares were as-of-yet not discovered or isolated elements.

Working on my next print for #printersolstice2425 prompt cobalt. All animals need cobalt for metabolism, even if it’s an ultratrace element in us. We need it as cobalamin aka vitamin B12. So I’m working on another scientist portrait: x-ray crystallographer & chemist Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1910-1994) who won the Nobel for determining the structure of bio molecules vitamin B12, penicillin & insulin.

My Lino block (green vinyl) in progress is mostly carved and shows a young Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin from chest up in reverse in a blouse tied with a bow. Her ball-and-stick molecular model for penicillin appears over her shoulder and her blouse has a specific repeating pattern of circles and nested broken circles like a labyrinth.

as part of my role as an #ACS Career Consultant, I spoke with a #chemist just finishing a #bachelors degree in a small south Asian country, looking to come to the US. Part of the conversation shifted from audio to text chat so they could ask about being part of the #LGBTQIA2S community when looking for #PhD advisors and programs. I shared NOGLSTP, My Fave Queer Chemist, and told them to look for inclusion statements on faculty webpages. are there other resources I should share?

I appreciate articles like this. The petroleum, polymer, and packaging industries bear a huge responsibility for the huge amount of plastic and plastic waste -- including the various efforts to hide behind ineffective recycling. As a #chemist, I wonder how we market truly biodegradable materials?

Thread: Jolene, but fluorine

Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine

I'm begging of you please don't take my electron
Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine
Please don't take it just because you can

Your radius is beyond compare
With flaming protons packed in there With nine electrons and shells so thin You experience so little shielding
You got the largest electronegativity
And I cannot compete with you FluorineIt's attracted to you in orbits
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From ionizing when it gets close to you Fluorine
And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my electron
But you don't know what it means to me Fluorine

Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine
I'm begging of you please don't take my electron
Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine
Please don't take it just because you can You could have your choice of electron But I could never bond again
It's the only one for me
FluorineI had to have this talk with you
My valence depends on you
And whatever you decide to do Fluorine
Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine
I'm begging of you please don't take my electron
Fluorine, fluorine, fluorine, fluorine
Please don't take it even though you can Fluorine, fluorine
