The image displays a vintage poster for Victor Herbert's comic opera "Fortune Teller." The design is striking, with bold red and white colors dominating the composition. At the center of the poster stands an illustration of King Jack or Knight from a playing card suit, depicted in profile facing to the right. He wears traditional European attire indicative of royalty, including a crown-like headpiece adorned with feathers.

Overlapping on top of this central figure are stylized red text and graphics that read "Victor Herbert's Comic Opera 'Fortune Teller'" prominently at the upper part. Additional texts include descriptions such as “With Famous ‘Gypsy Love Song’” and mention specific seating details for an event, including a date (December 6 to December 17) and time ("8:30 P.M."). The venue is listed as "Emery Theatre" in Cincinnati.

On the bottom right corner of the poster, there's smaller text indicating that this print was created by Victor Herbert himself. There are also details about ticket prices for different seat categories ranging from $25 to $40, and a note mentioning “Federal Theatre and Music Project.”

The overall design features sharp contrasts between red and white elements with black outlines adding clarity and definition to the shapes and text.

This poster is indicative of promotional materials used during the mid-20th century for theatrical productions [...]

Who needs Gilbert & Sullivan when we have #trump cabinet meetings? #comicopera

Marissa and my MiL and I went to "Patience" today at the Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. I had forgotten how very pointy this one is; among the targets are:

* dukes
* poets
* the aesthetic movement
* moralizing poetry
* weird poetic pronunciations
* true love
* the British army's self-image
* men dressing in ways that impress other men, and assuming it's attractive to women !! (this might be a modern gloss but it's kind of explicitly there in the plot too)
* women getting old (I think I side with Sullivan on this, what the hell was Gilbert's hang-up)

It gives me great joy to imagine W.S. sitting down and saying "today I have to write some bad poetry" and probably having to throw out the first couple versions as not bad enough.

Musical Interlude: OK, now for something different...I've decided to give you an opera. Don't worry, it's short. And funny. And more importantly, in English. "Gallantry," which I've seen in person, is a soap opera...in this case, literally, as drama unfolds in a hospital operating room, with actual commercial interruptions, in 50s style.

"Gallantry," by Douglas Moore, performed by Opera Santa Barbara.

Musical Interlude: OK, this music is ultra-famous. Some folks know it's from an opera, Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld." Few know it's an achingly funny comic opera that spoofs Greek mythology, and the romanticized tales of love therein. I saw a production a few years back that also played it as a satire of modern media culture, which actually works...there's a character called Public Opinion that scolds an unhappy couple for not staying together, which was played as a cable news reporter and her crew.

In this scene, the gods of Olympus are assembled in Hades for a party, and are entertained by an array of infernal spirits.

Anyway, as originally intended, here's the famous can-can from Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld," performed by the Opera de Lyon.
