How to remove and add Desktop Environments (DE)?

When I was setting up or installing CachyOS I decided to download COSMIC alongside KDE Plasma (which I set up as my DE). Though when I rebooted, COSMIC was the Default DE, though the DE I move forward with can be changed in the login menu.

My questions are:
- How can I change the default DE?
- How can I delete DEs?
- How can I add them if I want to use them in the future?

Ugh.

COSMIC doesn't theme Jellyfin Media Player (Soon to be Jellyfin Desktop)

I think I'm gonna switch to GNOME for a bit til I dump this distro for Ragata.

EDIT: Installed GNOME and KDE Plasma, but they're both semi broken on Pop, so I'm just going to wipe the drive and install the next distro I wanna test.

COSMIC is still far from perfect and, even just from a design standpoint limited to things I've touched, I can nitpick a lot. I can see that a lot of work that I've done hasn't changed much since I worked at the company. Some other things have marginal improvements, and some even have changes that have gone closer to my original idea since the initial meat-processing rounds of coming to a team consensus. I wish that I had more time to address, revisit, or rework ideas where I had some skepticism, such as the side panel, or ideas that I feel aren't currently being used to their full potential or feel rushed, like the left panel often used for navigation. Some ideas are yet unpolished and feel shallow (corner radii and density features aren't fully examined from a systems level and look odd optically in some contexts, like the Dock). Other ideas of mine are ones that I had prototyped but were neutered even before user testing due to what any mature design organization would instantly recognize as slight structural dysfunction. And there are so, so many tiling enhancements that I would have loved to dive into further!

But this is still an early project, with a lot of potential ahead of it, from a smaller organization. Frankly, for my needs, it's hard to imagine using anything outside of COSMIC or a tiling window manager. I hope the community keeps carrying this project forward.

I'm super proud to see COSMIC hit its biggest release yet. When I worked at System76, I was the senior-most (by experience) designer on the team, and I'm excited to see my ideas and our work come to this milestone. I encourage everyone who is interested in desktop Linux to take a look at COSMIC.

There are a lot of aspects of COSMIC that were ideas that I personally pushed for: Flexible tiling with a new shortcut system, simplified navigating through settings, such flexibility in placing the dock and applying a design token system (albeit that has been more limited in the current implementation). Not all of these ideas were initially accepted or acknowledged as good ideas, and even the ones that were were imagined in a more limited form before my involvement. But that's a normal part of the process... it takes discussion, prototyping, and user testing for designers to sell ideas. Now that I see YouTube videos specifically calling out the usability of features that I've championed in design, I can't help but feel proud.

@system76 was able to do what Canonical tried and didn't make it: create a brand new desktop.

If I were people in @ubuntu I would seriously think about adopting #CosmicDE and join forces with them.

They would get rid of the RedHat influence on Gnome and innovate much more on the desktop space, which they haven't put much effort in the last few years.

Giving COSMIC another spin now that it hit stable release. I'm slowly getting used to the auto-tiling (vs. KDE's manual tiling). Finally got the GNOME app theming working, too.

In terms of importance, this is a pretty big one! It's the first Unstable stream update delivered via our newly upgrade infra that supports Versioned Repositories! This is a first MVP version that the team are going to build upon and will lay the groundwork for future development and feature delivery.

Outside of this, this week we are delivering:

Cosmic 1.0.0
Gnome 49.2 updates
KDE Gear 25.12.0

Along with many more important updates including bug fixes.

Recently switched to CachyOS and COSMIC DE. I haven't been on a rolling-release distro for quite a while, and it's been great fun! I'm actually quite surprised by how stable COSMIC has been given that it's still in beta (though to be released soon).

My experience w/Bazzite has been so positive that I was about to switch my laptop to Bluefin, another UBlue image. I’m now hesitant because I know someday I’d want to migrate from Gnome to Cosmic DE, and needing to do a full reinstall for that is a downer.

Rebasing to an image that installs Cosmic over the top of Bluefin mostly works, but it’s not as clean as I’d like: there are a few errors that don’t seem to actually break anything in my limited testing. Maybe it’d be fine, or maybe it’d break at some unpredictable inopportune time, making it potentially less reliable than a traditional release distribution with a more proper install of Cosmic.

None of this is a criticism of Bluefin or UBlue, just acknowledging limitations.

Was excited for Fedora Cosmic Atomic until now. Time to go find a #Linux distro that:
- Has a reasonably sized community
- Puts out vuln patches quickly
- Atomic
- Runs #cosmicdesktop
- Not downstream of #Fedora AI nonsense

Yay.

The lack of accountability in the medical and legal professions that regularly makes the news makes me inclined to avoid any distro that permits slop when folks need a stable system to work.
