Side note: I read the 2006 Elmborg article mentioned above. It's been a while, and we've come some ways since then. I know I have.

Late night critical pedagogy / critical librarianship (#critLib) provocation:
What if when educators use "literacy" as a metaphor (and I'm particularly thinking of "information literacy" / #infoLit here),
what's instead actually being discussed is usually something much closer to "acculturation into the socially dominant ways of thinking"?
âInformation literacy: social class perspectives â at LILAC 2024â: https://www.preater.com/2024/04/19/information-literacy-social-class-perspectives-at-lilac-2024/
Weâve written a follow-up blog post for our @Infolitgroup #lilac24 panel to address more of the themes, comments and questions that we couldn't cover on the day.
Huge thanks to the contributors to our Padlet ahead of time and in the session. Our call to action is for all of us, regardless of social class background, to continue these conversations in our own libraries and communities.
A few years ago over on the dear old birdsite I asked if there are any library strategic plans that reference critical information literacy, or critical librarianship.
My finest librarianly searching has not found any more since. Does anyone know of any? (Other than University of West London - keeping it real! đ)

Next week I'm speaking with colleagues on a panel at the #LILAC24 conference about social class and information literacy.
We aim to bring forward working-class perspectives on library work and #InfoLit practices, challenge you, and create reflective discussion.
We'd welcome views on our provocations via our Padlet from those attending, or not:

Here's our article based on our collaborative #autoethnography of working-class experiences of libraries, in the @Infolitgroup Journal of Information Literacy issue on #Critlib #CritInfoLit.
@DFlynnLib, Teresa, @rosiehare and Krishna were a fabulous team of researchers and coauthors.

#introduction. I'm Andrew, a library director in London, UK.
I'm interested in how libraries can support equity and widening participation in higher education, working-class lived experience of HE, critical theories of library and education practice, and library leadership informed by #Critlib movement.
My background was originally in systems, with a strong interest in Free Software. I prefer Slackware as my OS.
Outside work, I am a randonneur (audax cyclist), mostly fixed wheel.
@rowmyboat It's not my area of expertise, but the segregated libraries of the American South are examples of both! #LibraryLife #CritLib
