How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu has got me in a choke hold! It's a dystopic scifi about an arctic plague that sweeps over the planet, seemingly impossible to stop. What makes this special is that the story is built up through intricately linked perspectives: earlier characters pop up in later chapters and I couldn't help taking notes on who is related to who (in a good, easter egg way). This is a *quiet*, introspective dystopia 👌 #bookstodon #BooksofMastodon #scifi #currentreads

Pictured here is DEFY by Dr. Sunita Sah, out from One World.

I was really excited to read this galley because it both feels really timely and also is perfect for the work I do.

DEFY is about the way we’re trained from childhood to be compliant, to be obedient, and to not make waves. Sah sets out to explore what we lose when we lose the ability to voice our concerns, speak up, and advocate for ourselves.

This isn’t a book about changing the world (though maybe it could be). First and foremost it’s a book about teaching readers to stand up for themselves and others more, even (or maybe especially) when the stakes don’t seem that high.

Sah offers a modern history of compliance, great case studies of moments when compliance leads to disastrous results, along with lessons in how to become a more active participant in the decisions that impact your life.

Being about two chapters in, I’ve noticed a lot of parallels with case studies from research on psychological safety, so I’m excited to see the overlap between this and that subject area. And, of course, I’m looking forward to learning more strategies on how to defy.

QOTD: what new book are you most looking forward to in 2025?

For this evening's #FridayReads, I'm finishing up the compelling read "Penance" by Eliza Clark and slowly burning through "Remi Bone" by William L. Myers, Jr. Still excited to start "Death of a Bookseller" by Alice Slater.

But I've been reading a lot of mysteries lately so it's good to counter it with something humorous and light to read so I'm happy to start the last issue of the series "The Great British Bump Off" by John Allison.

I'm reading LONE WOMEN by Victor LaValle and WHITE CAT, BLACK DOG by Kelly Link - BOTH OF WHICH ARE OUT TODAY - but you will have to wait on my reviews since I'm deliberately savoring them, because I don't want either of them to end.
My #review for now: GO BUY THEM!

One of my #currentreads thanks to #bookstodon.

#speculativefiction from the African diaspora, and an incredibly powerful collection of #scifi, #horror, #folklore, #fantasy and so much more.

Highly recommended for those interested in exploring sci fi and speculative fiction from around the world.

And if you're curious about sci-fi? Even more reason to check this out.

The genre has much more to offer than you think.

A Black girl wearing an orange astronaut suit holds a white flower. The background is green. The title is Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction.

Evening #BookMastodon What are you currently reading this Thanksgiving eve?

I recently started reading the latest book by the bestselling author Holly Jackson, "Five Survive". I'm already finding it intriguing and having that mysterious nature that she had in her megabit trilogy.

I tend to read multiple books at the same time so you will see multiple posts of #currentreads

My #currentreads which I've started today

I normally have 2 books on the go, a print book and also a Kindle/ebook usually for bedside reading (so that I don't get moaned at for having the light on!)

#InTheBlinkOfAnEye by #JoCallaghan (this is a proof copy, it's due for publication early 2023)
