«Da anni analizzo le condizioni di lavoro di milioni di operai invisibili dell'IA in più di venti paesi. Alcuni insegnano agli autovelox a leggere automaticamente le targhe dei veicoli, altri analizzano brevi estratti audio per verificare la corretta interpretazione degli assistenti vocali e altri ancora decidono se un contenuto sui social debba essere raccomandato o filtrato. Tutte funzioni semplici, come leggere una cifra in un'immagine scattata da una telecamera, ascoltare una frase captata da uno smartphone o giudicare se un'immagine su internet è adatta a un certo pubblico, che sono fondamentali per far funzionare app, assistenti vocali, postazioni elettroniche eccetera.
Essere pagati per realizzare microtasks per produrre servizi di IA è sempre più frequente, soprattutto in paesi con tutele lavorative deboli. Le retribuzioni oscillano tra salari orari minimi e cottimo, spesso insufficienti come unica fonte di reddito. Anche se alcune persone riescono a guadagnare fino a 15 euro all'ora nei paesi più ricchi, nel Sud globale si incontrano frequentemente casi di persone pagate qualche centesimo per task. E questa fonte di reddito può scomparire da un giorno all'altro, senza garanzia.»
Contrariamente a quanto si va affermando da almeno quattro anni, con i progressi tecnologici e l'impiego dei sistemi di IA nei diversi contesti - sociali, educativi, istituzionali e aziendali - i carichi di lavoro umano non diminuiranno ma aumenteranno, a tutti i livelli.
In questo scenario, i ruoli a più alto rischio sono quelli svolti dai lavoratori dei dati (data workers), persone perlopiù ignorate benché a fondamento dei processi di addestramento dei sistemi di IA, già oggi sfruttati, precari e mal pagati dalle società Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) in quasi ogni parte del mondo (https://hal.science/hal-04662589v1/file/Report_EnCOre-final.pdf).

Soyons sans angélisme: les gens qui ne font pas cet effort éthique minimal dans leurs papiers ou panels ne sont pas nécessairement fainéants ou naïfs (certains oui; à la limite si on est plus pédagogue que moi, on peut en sauver 2-3).
Au-delà de la médiocrité ambiante sur le sujet à tous les niveaux, beaucoup savent, et n’en ont absolument rien à foutre.

This paper acknowledges "At present, we lack the ability to fully care for the eight billion humans alive at any given time, to say nothing of the quintillions of other animals alive at any given time" although I'm not sure who are the "we" the authors refer to, the global North in general, perhaps?
If there's a possibility of AI consciousness, perhaps people training models should stop exposing algorithms to the worst of humanity through words, sounds and images?
But those wielding the most powerful AI can't look after the welfare of #DataWorkers in their own category of being who are alive today and doing their #piecework, faking automation and fixing algorithmic mistakes

The Unknown Women of Content Moderation
Many female data workers in Nairobi endure sexual, mental, and physical abuse. This zine sheds light on their experiences as women, mothers, and migrants working as content moderators at #Sama.
"My name is Botlhokwa Ranta, and I have authored this Zine about women like myself who worked at a company named Sama, doing content moderation for Meta in Nairobi, Kenya. Sama is considered by some as a new-age sweatshop that exploits workers’ rights whenever possible. With this zine, I wanted to shed light on our gendered experiences in this working environment, where our vulnerable positions as young women, migrants, and mothers were exploited. Most of the stories are traumatic and come from a place of pain and tragedy. These stories aim to show the world that there are women who would literally go to the ends of the earth for their children and endure the unthinkable. After so much physical, sexual, and mental trauma, we deserve to be heard loud and clear. The stories are told by real women who went through real-life traumatic experiences while working at Sama in Nairobi....."
