@sarahjamielewis In what way is #defederation "untenable," and in what way does it "go against the values inherent to the #Fediverse"?

When you think #Defederation is a new term, I know you've never talked to an email server admin ;)
When someone says "We are going to block instance A, you too should defederate them and dissociate. If you are a user on that instance, leave immediately or else you too will be isolated", please remember to ask for reasons, evidence and factual substantiation. Also make sure you search the fediverse using your own search facility and other tools and see if you can find the chain of events that lead to the present situation. This will take time. But make sure you do this. This is specially important if you are an admin of an instance; if you are in charge of other people's accounts. In that case you are taking decisions that will impact on other people's freedoms and experience.
I woke up to a bunch of notifications here on Mastodon this morning of a bunch of people I follow who had moved their accounts off of Fosstodon.org to other instances due to all the drama happening over on Fosstodon with one of their moderators.
Sad to see some of these people who had called Fosstodon home for several years having to find a new home, but glad to see they have done so.
I encourage everyone who might have lost contact with some of those folks to try your best to track them down, as I've read from several where the migration didn't go 100% for several of them, so they lost both people they were following and people that were following them.
I have been on the "defederate fosstodon" wagon for years now and I feel it's finally the time for instance admins to pull the trigger.
More here:
So this appears to be the post that exposed fosstodon.org, the administrator does not consider a nazi moderating its instance a big problem

@homegrown
I wish more instance admins would utilize the limit/silence feature instead of the sledgehammer of #suspend / #defederation
I believe Dan plans to never #federate , revoke federation, or at least retain the ability to do so. See term 2 on Loop's website: https://loops.video/legal/terms-of-service
which says such things as "under this license you may not:...use the materials for any commercial purpose, or for any public display (commercial or non-commercial);.....transfer the materials to another person or "mirror" and the materials on any other server...This license shall automatically terminate if you violate any of these restrictions and may be terminated by Loops at any time." and "Loops may revise these terms of service for its website at any time without notice" Loops' terms are not open source and could be used to justify #defederation or changing policy on federation. And considering how dan behaves with peers who disagree with him, I could see him deciding federation isn't what he wants to do with Loops, which he treats not as an #opensource thing but as #proprietary
NO #FOSSWASHING
just seems kinda off that most people don't consider ideology to be a factor in defederation from kolektiva (or other instances)
like how long would you suppose an anarchist, anti-colonial instance would get along with liberal instances? authoritarian left ones? "apolitical" instances?
not discounting that folks have negative interactions with specific accounts, etc.
look at how many liberals react to calm, polite replies that accurately point to liberal policies and politicians helping to bring us to the current moment.. rage, insta-blocks, tirades against whole instances and ideologies based off a single encounter..
The first #defederation.
Fortunately, modern federated protocols don't grant servers so much power over other servers, so we don't have the eris problem any more.
Billionaire fascist shitbag Zuckerberg and META are blocking links to Fediverse entities.
Time for #Defederation
Thanks to @mike and @kev and co for very thoughtfully engaging with the question of #defederation from #Threads. Fosstodon will let individuals decide. Bravo! https://fosstodon.org/@fosstodon/113826371651831656
Threads.net has been suspended on this server (darkmoon.social) due to Meta's policy decisions that enable systemic abuse and disinformation across its platforms.
This is a decision I've been mulling over for a while now, and recent events have pushed me to finally pull the trigger. I will not associate with fascists, even by proxy. I'm sorry to lose access to good content by people who have accounts there, but enough is enough.

People keep saying that everyone should defederate threads, but the issue with that plan is that then I can’t view the Onion’s posts, which is my main way of keeping up to date about the world
@phocks this would be a good time for #Mastodon instances and the rest of the #Fediverse to reconsider their ill-advised #defederation with #Threads
