I listened to a talk in Thai by Somdej Phra Buddhaghosacharya (P.A. Payutto) who explains the first three Brahmaviharas (Metta, Karuna, Mudita) as relating to other fellow (human) beings according to their state: When they are in their regular state, then Metta, being a friend-ly fellow human companion, is the appropriate quality. When they are in need, then Karuna should be our response. When they succed in something, then Mudita is the appropriate response. What about Upekkha then? He explains that this quality leans towards a wisdom / Dhamma side: We need to understand that what we and others experience (and to what we may respond with Metta, Karuna, Mudita) is also grounded in causes and conditions - and that is why Upekkha (being close but not meddling) is needed here. The Venerable then exemplifies the Brahmaviharas in everyday situations that parents might have with their children. I think this example works well. Certainly parents can support their kids with Metta, Karuna and Mudita in different situations - but can parents take care of their kids forever? When they are grown up and find their own paths Upekkha is definitely needed. (But I guess we can think of more situations before this time where parents need equanimity lol.) Later in the talk we hear that as noble Upekkha (being with others but not commenting or meddling too much) sounds, a society that leans heavily towards Upekkha without Metta, Karuna, Mudita - could be a society where people might tend to fight just for themselves.

Buddhistdoor Quote for Today: If you are out on the wheel, you are caught on the dizzying momentum of going round in circles. We call it samsara—samsara-vatta means going round in circles—endless cycles, not really going anywhere but round. That is why when you do things from ignorance, you find yourself coming back and repeating the same things over and over again. — Ajahn Sumedho
