Both, private wells and the public drinking water system on Jersey is contaminated since the 1960s, when the airport started using fire foam containing PFAS.
Around year 2000, 3M stopped making this particular foam.
But Jersey's soil is full of it. And so is the water. Still. A forever chemical is just that, a #ForeverChemical
The Guardian quotes one resident living close to the airport in the 1990s, whose father got kidney and bladder cancer in the late 1990s, and he himself was more recently diagnosed with a slow-growing blood cancer that indicates it started in 1998.
Other cases occurred.
Some sleepy officials only started to move the public drinking water off the heavier contaminated wells in 2022.

The EPA's new definition of "PFAS" is basically no definition, they are excluding some chemicals in pharmaceuticals & pesticides that are generally defined as PFAS.
Instead of using a clear definition of "PFAS", the EPA plans to take a “case-by-case” approach.
This is at odds with, other federal agencies, the European Union, Canada & most of the scientific world.

Challenge of #PFAS is making sure we don’t make problem worse by releasing other gases or creating harmful #chemicals. Humans have long history of trying to solve problems & making things worse. Take Refrigerators. Freon, a chlorofluorocarbon, was the solution to replace toxic and flammable ammonia in refrigerators, but then it caused stratospheric ozone depletion. It was replaced with hydrofluorocarbons, which contribute to climate change
