Anyone using #FreeBSD or #GhostBSD w/ Realtek ALC287 audio? It's a Tiger Lake system. I tried booting it with FreeBSD the other day, and got a number of audio issues. Mainly:

  • Occasional audio glitches, during audio playback.
  • Crackling of audio while adjusting volume.
  • Volume in general, way too low.

AND yes, I did play around with the volume in mixer, and the sysctl PCM volume.

Any advice? #BSD

@dexter I should probably login to Telegram and get my OSS life back up and running, and re-engage with people. On that topic...

There's a fun presentation that I could offer from my workstation builds involving GhostBSD: "SED/OPAL full disk encryption on NVMe, tuning EPYC Zen5 and ZFS mirror for the OS".

Clearly that would need a better name, but there's some usefulness given that Ghost doesn't support the usual GELI encryption scheme in the installer, and then... FDE with SED has no processing overhead like GELI, no perf io reduction required. Zen4 and Zen5 benefit from quite a bit of system tuning for FreeBSD based workstations, so that's important for considerations.

Once the movers stop holding my homelab hostage and deliver my life's belongings, then I'll be able to generate a presentation on the subject. Apparently, "it's on a truck", still... nearly one month after moving. Fun times.

🌐 Sigamos hablando de sistemas operativos. GhostBSD es de esos que no hacen ruido, pero cuando lo pruebas… algo cambia. No te abruma, no te empuja, no te vende nada. Firefox 😅

A nice post about switching from a Linux distribution to freeBSD.

Quote
>>
The interesting thing here is that both are similar and yet very different, mainly owing to their very different histories, with freeBSD being a direct derivative of the original UNIX and its BSD derivative. One of the most significant differences is probably that Linux is just a kernel, with (usually) the GNU/Hurd userland glued on top of it to create GNU/Linux. GNU and BSD userland are similar, and yet different, with varying levels of POSIX support. This effectively means that freeBSD is a singular OS with rather nice documentation (the FreeBSD handbook).

The basic summary here is that freeBSD is rather impressive and easy to set up for a desktop, especially if you use a customized version like GhostBSD.

Cada día me da más vueltas por la cabeza dejar por . Lo que ví me pareció tan interesante y además me estuve informando mucho sobre como funciona, que me dieron ganas de tenerla instalada como distro principal.

So, Cathode Ray Dude made me a kind gift of a portable SSD, and so even though I had some partitions set aside on my desktop PC's main drive for a dual boot, it would probably be quite a bit easier to use the SSD for this purpose. #GhostBSD second boot?

There's some part of our addled mind-brain that really wants to do a dual boot setup and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just a childhood nostalgia thing. We were happiest on #computers in the 1990s and trying wacky stuff like ternary boots (Win98 / NT / Linux, Win98 / Linux / BeOS, stuff like that.)

Gosh remember when you could get a PowerPC #Macintosh with a "PC card" in it? I don't mean a PCMCIA card, I mean a card with an Intel or equivalent processor on it, and you could switch back and forth between MacOS and Windows.

@rastilin @cheryanne Logically therefore, the remaining choice for Chery must be #OpenBSD or #FreeBSD or even #GhostBSD 😜

Please tell me that you already know that the BSD now podcast exists. Also tell me that you have listened to at least a part, of one of the beautiful BSD podcasts

When I was not a part of the FediVerse, at least not the active part, because I've had my accounts for a long time, I knew about BSD podcasts but I never seeked one actively.

However you have no excuse, because you not only run one of the flavors of BSD, you are also part of the FediVerse so you have no excuses not to go and listen to the BSD podcasts.

There are so many diverse subjects, that all you have to do, is pick one that you like, download it in a client that's not encumbered by a massive company, preferably one that's also free Open Source, listen enjoy and learn

And there are many different diverse podcasts

I'll talk about those later

The image shows Antenna Pod, a FOSS podcast client, interface with a dark background. At the top, there are various icons and status indicators, including a time stamp of "01:12," a battery icon showing 71%, and a temperature of 23 degrees. The main visual element is a logo featuring a yellow disco ball with spikes, a red microphone stand, and the text "BSD NOW" in bold black letters. Below the logo, the text "BSD Now • 12 Jun" is displayed, followed by "615: Wifi Brakes Unlocked." A "Shownotes" button is present, and the playback controls are visible, including a progress bar showing 24 seconds out of 43 minutes and 38 seconds, with play, pause, and skip buttons.

we would like a dual boot system so that if there's trouble, we can go to #Linux Mint, but perhaps we're not thinking this through the right way. I can't remember whether it was Daria or Cathode Ray Dude (we all live together) who suggested that rather than dual booting I should run other OSes off removable drives. I rather like that idea, then I can just make a #GhostBSD system the main, make sure the file system is something Linux can read, and then boot off a thumb drive for Linux #gaming

Wow. I can think about this stuff again! I must be less insane. Uh, sorry for being insane everyone. I know it's...(*sighs*) we've lost a lot of friends.

I would like to say, #GhostBSD so far has given me the most *relaxed* alternate operating system experience on the PC, even if it's the flakiest with stuff like games. now if we could only figure out how to get the dual boot working (only GhostBSD comes up in the boot menu just how the fuck does #UEFI shit work anyway) ~Chara
