This is an Atmospheric Watercolor Landscape Painting in portrait orientation in an A5 sketchbook. Using Daniel Smith Black Tourmaline Genuine, Bloodstone Genuine, and Quinacridone Burnt Orange, this piece feels like fall! I made an effort to push more pigment into the atmosphere to take advantage of the granulating properties of Tourmaline and Bloodstone. The burnt orange gives it a warm glow and the feeling of fall foliage. The landmass is has lots of texture with all colors represented and plenty of grasses drawing through the thick layers.

This is a Reflective Atmospheric Watercolor Landscape Painting in portrait orientation in an A5 sketchbook. For this painting I'm experimenting with Daniel Smith Undersea Green which is made with 3 pigments: Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Gold, and Nickel Azo Yellow. This color has gritty granulation and pigment splitting into yellow and blue. In masstone it is dark olive green, which is seen along the tree line. Medium values bloom above and below the tree line and have a yellow halo. As the color is diluted more three light values lean more yellow. The tree line and its reflection consists of evergreens.

This is a atmospheric watercolor landscape in 8 x 10 portrait orientation. I used Daniel Smith hematite genuine (a warm black) and burnt umber. These earth tones create a pleasant atmosphere with the granulation from hematite genuine and the warmth of burnt umber. That warmth comes through on the left side of the composition. The rugged foreground leans into dark values with peaks of medium values and a few flecks of the white watercolor paper visible. The center of the the foreground is a triangular swatch of the white watercolor paper giving some depth to the composition. The granulating effects of hematite genuine are seen hanging in the light values of the atmosphere in vertical swatches. Long grasses add movement above the horizon line and shorter grasses provide texture in the foreground.

This is an atmospheric watercolor landscape. I used two granulating watercolor paints: Moonglow by Daniel Smith and Tundra Violet by Schmincke. The foreground consists of textured curved hills that meet in an open center that is untouched with pigment. Usually I make the foreground mostly dark value with peaks of medium, light and no value. For this one both bottom corners are medium/light values to show off the granulating properties of the watercolors used. Tundra Violet splits into its blue Ultramarine and brownish tan pigments. With the texture of the coldpress watercolor paper, the granulation is very noticable and gritty. This can be seen in the bottom corners and in vertical swatches into to atmosphere/sky of the painting. Moonglow also contains ultramarine blue but in this particular painting, the granulation appears more like a muted cool purple. Grasses add texture and movement to both the foreground and sky

Caput Mortuum is such a lovely deep violet brown pigment with heavy granulation, that I had to pair it with the also granulating Cobalt blue for most joy.

Open sketchbook with some color studies, a wash from blue to brown, mixes and two sketches. One of a bird and one of a wonderfully cloudy landscape with a lonely house just waiting for guests to come over. Probably cake and tea are ready already...

Eileen the crow the third.

The freaking third time I tried this and the third time it failed. I worked with liquid masking and while trying to remove it I scraped away the watercolour. I lost so much details and have no photo of the before version. ONE DAY I WILL GET IT!

I bought granulating pigments to make my own granulating watercolour. Also I splurged and bought more naturals Schmincke watercolours. I only used these paints.
This was a loose short painting.

Played a bit with the new palette last week, discovering its possibilities. Right now I'm a lot in the mood to paint little, tiny really, landscapes. Each of these is about play card sized in real live. Still I feel like I managed to achieve some depth and glow.
While exploring, I also tried different techniques while doing so. Really neat!
