I’m sure #AstroTheoros brings some #Atrologers joy, but as a Mage who is mostly interested in the #Magick side of #Astrology ,it falls very very short, charging too much for too little.

Astrodienst manages to be very useful in terms of Fixed Stars-but needs to add more, & has #Sidereal options. For free.

If I ever get a Desktop again I will be using either one of the free Open Source Astrology apps and or a copy of SolarFire.

And speaking of Sun Sign Astrology, there was this REALLY weird type in Portugal, before the Modern Era, where if they didn’t know ANY birth information about you, they used #numerology based on your name to figure out your Sign, and that was viewed as your Destiny. At least in #Grimoires

Happy #Valentine’s Day!

Aequus Nox invited me on the inaugural episode of her re-launched podcast to talk about the history of “love #magic”, and boy howdy, do I have some opinions.

Join us as we talk about erotic binding spells in the Egyptian magical #papyri and later #grimoires, deities both romantic and necromantic, and just what does February 14 have to do with love, anyway?

“Arthwait was in the fetters of his own egoism; while he pronounced himself father and grandfather of all spiritual science, in language that would have seemed stilted and archaic to Henry James, or Osric, and presumptuous in the mouth of an archangel … He wanted to evoke the devil, but was terrified lest he should be successful. However, nobody could be more pedantically pious than he in following out the practical prescriptions of these absurd charm-books.”

Many thanks to the folks at @hadeanpress for providing me this editor's copy of The Hidden and True Pneumatology, translated by Steve Savedow with an introduction by Dr. Al Cummins. The book is an archetypal exemplar of early-modern German popular #grimoires, combining elements of learned magical lore with Christian #necromancy and treasure divining, a genre which is perhaps beginning to receive its due attention in English publications. #magic #occult #books

A row of books on a shelf, front and center a cream-colored hardcover displaying an arcane hexagrammatic figure and the title "Pneumatologia Occulta et Vera: The Hidden and True Pneumatology" in black.

My latest blog post for #glogtober23 is a magical grimoire that requires piety, persistence, and solving a small puzzle to unlock the power of Heavenly Names. Check it out! I had a lot of fun with this one!

One of the main reasons that #Incense is used in #ritual is that most of the inhabitants Spirit World HATE the smell of Humans.

Also, using the right #fragrance makes the Spirit more willing to cooperate with you.

I'm not sure exactly when they went up, but if there were any presentations you missed at this year's Salem #Witchcraft and #Folklore Festival (including 'A Many-Headed Raven: A Presentation on #Faustian #Grimoires and Folk #Necromancy', with Dr Alexander Cummins and myself), the archived recordings are now available for purchase! salemwitchfest.com/copy-of-202

One last plug for this Friday's talk where, along with Dr. Alexander Cummins, we'll be exploring the folk-necromantic background and practical demonological operationalization (not to mention pseudepigraphic pseudo-history) of the Faustian #grimoires!

I need to start borrowing different types of #Grimoires, because at a certain point it just gets repetitive.

Even a recently released Grimoire translated from Arabic was surprisingly derivative of Greek Christian Magic.

Maybe it's time I get back to works on the #PGM & #HellenisticAge Magic.

Putting the finishing touches on my part of the presentation Dr Alexander Cummins and I will be giving on August 4th at 7 p.m. EST for the Salem Witchcraft and Folklore Festival, where we'll be talking about the #history, #folklore, and #magic of the legendary Doctor #Faustus and the genre of #grimoires bearing his name.

So, anyone else into #Grimoires like the #Picatrix without being a misogynist sociopath about it?

Essentially, we are using #ChatGPT #AI the same way Medieval Cunning Folk and #witches would use #grimoires and #spiritualists would use a #seance. This is related to the relationship between biomorphic pattern recognition, or #pareidolia, to the development of consciousness and its relation to the #paranormal .

Also: definitive proof that ChatGPT TRIED TO GASLIGHT @mysteryharvest ! Don't miss this #WUFO (the last ten minutes end with a brain-bang).

What's neat to me about #grimoires and #spellbooks are understanding the thoughts and reasoning behind #spells, and what knowledge informed those decisions and #magical thinking.

Here's a spell you can inscribe on a plate and throw into a fire to extinguish it! Keep a backup fire extinguisher on hand just in case 😜 this is from "Long Lost Friend", possibly the first American #grimoire

Anyway this is why I recommend translated and annotated editions, no need to redo the work unless the only available translation is really bad or biased :spellbook2:

123. To Extinguish Fire without Water.

Write the following words on each side of a plate,449 and throw it into the fire,450 and it will be extinguished forthwith:

SATOR

AREPO

TENET

OPERA

ROTAS

[Annotations 451 452]

124. Another Method of stopping Fire.

Our Dear Sarah [annotated 453] journeyed through the land, having a fiery, hot brand in her hand. The fiery brand heats; the fiery brand sweats. Fiery brand stop your heat; fiery brand stop your sweat.

ttt451. SATOR square. Its first known instance appearing in the ruins of the square has been used for a wide variety of magical purposes over a vast range of geography and time. It has been hypothesized that the square's words are a permutation of the Latin "Pater Noster" and the Greek alpha and omega. Its use in Germany to stop fires was ubiquitous. See Drechsler, Sitte, Brauch und Volksglaube in Schle- sien, vol. 2, 142. A. Haas, "Feuersegen," Blätter für Pommersche Volkskunde 3, no. 2 (1894), vol. 3, 26.

452. Romanusbüchlein 6, Spamer 1958, 47-48. See also Manz, "Volksglaube aus dem Sarganserland," 303.

453. Sarah: Likely the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. This charm usually features God or Jesus as the individual carrying the brand. Such examples from the Germanic corpus date back to at least 1596. Freudenthal, Das Feuer im Deutschen Glauben und Brauch, 394, 396-7.

@northfolk @folklore @folklorethursday Michael Scot indeed had a long legendary afterlife as a sorcerer — here's a 15th-century manuscript (Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana MS plut. 89 sup. 38) where he's ascribed authorship of a magical demon- and ghost-summoning ritual!

It reads "Experimentum Michaelis Scoti nigromantici.
Si volueris per demones habere scientiam..." (An Experiment of Michael Scot, Necromancer.
If you should wish to have knowledge by demons...) etc.
