Two researchers in the field of machine learning have won US$60,000 for being the first to reveal the title and author of a sealed papyrus scroll carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy in AD 79. The crucial lines identify the work as part of On Vices by the Greek philosopher Philodemus.

I'm currently beaming in to #ISAWNYU PhD candidate Amber Jacob's public dissertation defense in which she's giving us a peek at the heretofore unpublished, fragmentary corpus of Demotic medical texts on papyrus (originating in Tebtunis) that she's edited and translated. To date only 5 demotic medical papyri have ever been published. She says probably 8 distinct manuscripts are represented in the Tebtunis material, comprising what appears to have been a collected medical compendium with some information concerning the identity of the original ancient compiler.

Jacob's text edition will appear in due time in the Carlsberg Papyri Series as P.Tebt.Med.dem.

Happy #Valentine’s Day!

Aequus Nox invited me on the inaugural episode of her re-launched podcast to talk about the history of “love #magic”, and boy howdy, do I have some opinions.

Join us as we talk about erotic binding spells in the Egyptian magical #papyri and later #grimoires, deities both romantic and necromantic, and just what does February 14 have to do with love, anyway?

I added a few pages to #Griffe's docs: alternative projects, downstream projects, and built-in/official/third-party extensions.

Very cool projects mentioned in there! #Docspec, #pdoc, #papyri, #quartodoc, etc. And I discovered a few Griffe extensions in the process, it's awesome 🤩

The way papyrologists reconstruct ancient texts based on tiny scraps of papyrus seems like sorcery.

And really, it is sorcery. But it also makes sense. Here's a look at an example from the Hesiodic Catalogue of Women.

There's a new informational website for the Oxyrhynchus #Papyri at oxyrhynchus.web.ox.ac.uk, replacing the old website (papyrology.ox.ac.uk/POxy/), which is no longer available. the images of the Oxyrhynchus papyri have now been migrated to Oxford's Sustainable Digital Scholarship platform & are no longer accessible on the old database and are searchable via the above new website as well. SDS now also hosts images of P.Nekr. and the Bodleian facsimiles of the Herculaneum papyri. (Via Classicists-l)
