Back in my Twitter days, I befriended a guy online from Georgia.
We were both interested in the military and #military #history. One day he sends me this link & suggested we both try to make #hardtack, a common food #ration for both #Union & #Confederate armies. The original recipe lived up to its reputation, hard as a rock.
Later we came up with different methods of making them to be more palatable.

Did you know that #hardtack, the long lasting flour & water #cracker used by seafarers & soldiers, was made round at #sea & square on land?
During sea voyages, hardtack was stored in barrels (hence: round), while during land campaigns it was stored in wooden boxes, & therefore made square.
#British Royal Navy sailors were issued 50g more hardtack than #US #Navy sailors.
During Queen Victoria's reign, now made with machines, hardtack became a cost efficient hexagonal shape.
Heute vor 66 Jahren: Am 31.07.1958 wurde der Teak-Test (Operation #Hardtack I) auf Johnston Island durchgeführt. Eine 3,8 Mt Bombe explodierte in 76 km Höhe, verursachte sichtbare Effekte bis nach Hawaii und Kommunikationsstörungen im Pazifik. Crew & Tiere waren teils betroffen.

What is it about hardtack that makes it attractive? I don't know if it's reading Aubrey/Maturin novels or what, but I'm developing a bit of meme-lust for #hardtack.

Got a copy of "Bildad's All-Star Whaling Ship Managing Sim 1851" for Hannukah! Can't wait to play-- you can outfit ships, poach good sailors from rivals, sign contracts, craft high accuracy quadrants, piss off captains with pious moralizing, and it has DLC for scanning horizons with a spyglass as you wait for your ships to turn back! I'm going to pack my first ship with low quality hardtack, good alcohol, and no citrus just try it out.
