The UCP is doubling down on attacking municipal autonomy on planning our own urban infrastructure.
Listen to some of the language used here. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way. I hope the new city council sees the light." You do things OUR way or you get our authoritarian beat-down.

EXCUSE ME?! ONE province, Doug Ford's ultra-Conservative Ontario, has this legislation, and this UNPRECEDENTED OVERREACH took the rest of the country, the world even (making us a global laughing stock), by SHOCK! But according to Devin Dreeshen, this absolute anomaly is "the norm" across the country? Wow.
"This type of social engineering, trying to change people's behaviour when they don't want to change is just ruining cities by taking away their vehicle lanes and parking. It is stupid."
Okay... now we need to take a serious long deep breath on this one.
First of all: "Trying to change people's behaviour" is in fact the purpose of urban planning. It is the city's RESPONSIBILITY to incentivize sustainable infrastructure which will allow the city to grow instead of festering in traffic congestion through induced traffic, when we have all the public options to counter this urban sprawl and allow all people in the city to move around freely.
And SAFELY, without putting EVERYBODY'S LIFE IN CONSTANT DANGER (this is also known as "public safety")! And yes by everybody, I mean everybody. Not just cyclists, but also children, elderly, disabled, pedestrians, AND OTHER DRIVERS. The only danger to pedestrians is motorists. The only danger to cyclists is motorists. The only danger to motorists is motorists. The only cause of traffic congestion is also motorists.
Reducing car dependency is the desired goal for everybody, whether they drive or don't drive, or can't drive. This is the JOB of city council, and it's achieved through OPTIONS for everyone, not forcing anybody into or out of the established status quo.
Note that this extreme threat to the personal safety of individuals is the basis of the supreme court challenges to Doug Ford's legislation to deem it unconstitutional, because we all have the right to public safety. Oh, and guess what, the Supreme Court DID rule the law unconstitutional. Doug Ford is trying to appeal that ruling, but has not succeeded in doing so. Yet, according to Alberta's Minister of Transportation, this singular law which was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Canada is "the norm" for Canadian provinces? LOL!
But 1st-class citizens "don't WANT to change", according to Dreeshen, so 2nd-class citizens need to "see the light" and realize "the easy way or the hard way" that they have no say in the matter!
Have you ever heard anything more entitled?
This entire speech is so absolutely hateful. Devin Dreeshen needs to be recalled immediately.
