The rise, rapid development, and adoption of AI-generated art poses an existential question which goes beyond base issues of consumption, mass media, and copyright law. AI art challenges what it means to be human, what we can aspire to be, and the nature of existence beyond the realm of material reality.

"You can be sure that if you consult the runes that the Wise One made,
They will tell you that silence is always a safe bet."

It is almost time for my annual reading of the Hávamál, in honor of Odin, the Wise One and Allfather. I have done this every winter around the solstice for the past 8 years, and I learn something new on every read-through.

I will start on the eve of December and read 8 stanzas per night until the Winter Solstice. If anyone wants to join me, I’ll be posting my take on them each evening under the hashtag #21NightsOfHavamal

Jackson Crawford’s The Wanderer’s Hávamál is here! A meticulous English translation of the Old Norse classic, Hávamál, complete with annotations and the original text from Codex Regius. With extras like his Cowboy Hávamál, it’s perfect for Norse mythology fans, old and new.

I have always been curious if #Havamal was read (or recited/listened to) in what we would think of today as a religious context, or if it was more literary in nature. Recognizing, of course, how much those things can and do overlap.

Any #OldNorse #Literature and #poetics folks out there have any input?

(Was plenty of fun to make, but I'd really like to go more back in the direction of lyrics with more depth... now working on a #shoegaze track based on #Hávamál and some #HalldórLaxness)

Random stanza from #Havamal:

"Wherever you go, be the best of men, for you never know when you will need friends. Be wise and cautious, speak with measured words, and keep your secrets close, for not all can be trusted."

I made this cross stitch as a Yule decoration for myself. Every year for the solstice, I re-read the Havamal and I am inspired to be a better human.
This is among my favorite verses and I thought it was appropriate for the gift-giving season.

An eight by ten inch cross stitch piece in an oak frame. It has text from verse fifty two of the Havamal bordered with poinsettias and holly. It reads: One needn't give grand gifts; oft' favor is bought for little. With a half loaf and a tilted bowl, I got myself a friend.

20.
A gluttonous man,
unless he watches himself,
will eat to his own detriment.
Wise men will often
ridicule a fool
on account of his belly.

Hávamál

It conveys the wisdom of moderation and the potential for negative judgment when one lacks restraint, especially in matters of appetite.

19.
Don’t hold onto the mead-horn,
but drink your fair share.
Say something useful or stay quiet.
And no one else
will judge you poorly
if you go to sleep early.

Hávamál

This stanza promotes the idea of sharing and fairness in drinking. The stanza also emphasizes the value of choosing silence over idle chatter. It suggests that one's decision to retire early is not to be judged negatively. Overall, the stanza promotes balanced behavior and thoughtful communication.

17.
It’s a fool who stares
when he hears comes to a feast —
he talks to himself, or he broods.
As soon as
He gets a drink,
he’ll say anything he knows.
-
This stanza advises being cautious in sharing secrets, as even a trustworthy friend may reveal them under pressure. It underscores the idea of selective trust and the importance of keeping certain matters private to avoid potential betrayal.

16.
An unwise man
thinks he’ll live forever
if only he can avoid a fight,
but old age
will give him no peace,
Even if weapons do.

Hávamál

This one is kind of the opposite of 15. It contrasts how the unwise man lives. Even if avoiding fights and thinking you’ll live forever that way, old age will still come and bring you its own kind of complications and pain that your weapons can’t fight.
