Just got a hCAPTCHA prompt for "items you can wear on your head" (not "that you wear on your head", but "that you CAN wear on your head") and… how hard am I trying? Because I could definitely wear the flip-flops on my head if I tried!

Just published a blog post tearing into hCaptcha’s so-called “accessibility” mode.
It’s not accessibility. It’s a cookie. And to get that cookie, you now have to submit your email and send a code via SMS to an U.S. phone number. It fails silently. It doesn’t confirm anything. You click “Confirm Code” and get “An error has occurred.” No cookie. No fallback. No support. And if you somehow get it? It’s a third-party cookie your browser probably blocks, and it expires. Then you get to do it all again.
Meanwhile, hCaptcha’s text-based challenge — the only mode that might actually work with a screen reader — isn’t tied to the cookie at all. It only shows up if the website owner specifically enables it. Most don’t. So even if you’re blind, even if you’re using assistive tech, you get the same unusable image grid as everyone else.
This isn’t accessibility. It’s exclusion wrapped in PR.

Not to mention #Twilio for sending registration SMS and #hCaptcha users have to solve on registration and sometimes when getting in contact with each other.

I appreciate all the discourse around #reCAPTCHA over the past few weeks. The Dazed & Confused paper was very enlightening.
A website that I manage was experiencing a dramatic uptick in spam from a contact form, as well as a few other pages that used reCAPTCHA. I have been testing out #hCaptcha for the past week and am happy to report that the spam bots have completely given up on us. It claims to be WCAG 2.1 compliant. It does play very nicely with VoiceOver on iOS and macOS.

I'm about to lose my mind with this #cookie consent banner bullshit. Is there a legitimate user who ever read, understood and requested their consent data later? Who is this for?
I understand third-party-tracking is/was a problem. I just want to offer a functional website without trying to figure out if #hcaptcha is allowed or not because the data privacy officers' bullshit cookie scanner got presented with some obscure Cloudflare load balancer cookie.
I am no longer human enough to use the Web. #HCaptcha clearly think that to use the Web we need to be 192% human and have a PhD in philosophy.

what the FUCK do they want from me
I tried to get into my #hcaptcha account to get the accessibility cookie. It wouldn't let me in, so I tried forgot my password, guess what, I was challenged with an hcaptcha. Asked Aira to solve the captcha to reset the password and never received the email. So I can't get in to get the cookie.
I'd be prepared to bet that this approach has better #accessibility and works better with screen readers than things like #recaptcha and #hcaptcha, too.

also i fixed that link so it doesn't point to cloudflare and u pointed it back so cloudlfare can continue its #hcaptcha LLM training.... if u care, avoid posting cf'd links. if u need help identifying cf sites, pls ask.
