Checking a few tickets for an Owncast repository for fixes to specific issues, I ran into this: “Too many requests.”

I now need to wait a few minutes to an hour to finish my review. Or I could log in (assuming I have an account there). 🙃

I love when I go to add a PDF as an attachment to an email and look to see how big it is before attaching via Apple’s file chooser—instead of file size—it tells me it was an email from so-and-so.

Thanks, Apple. File size is not a super relevant attribute to show to users, apparently.

Ha ha ha ha. Today I got the notification overlay telling me about this change (and how to undo it). Ugh. New features should not be enabled by default on existing accounts/installations.

I'm trying to get rid of Ubuntu

So if your software is available only in a Snap

I'm not going to get it

I can see why that might not bother you

But it's pissing me off that I can't find your competitors

Because your SEO game is too good

And you refuse to have your software available on Linux in a reasonable way

What are some software annoyances that make no sense still existing in 2025?

I'll start:
How is there no "Switch default account" button for Google accounts still? If you use more than 1 Google account (YouTube, Gmail, Calendar, etc) and want to change which account is automatically loaded, then you need to log out of all your accounts and then make sure that the first one you log back into, is the one you want as your default.

Another year, another 'best microSD cards' list. This time, Engadget's looking at 2025, and surprise, surprise: the Nintendo Switch 2 is pushing new, expensive microSD Express cards. Because who doesn't love paying a premium for a new 'standard' your old gear probably won't use? What tech standard are you *still* annoyed about upgrading for?

A curse on all those who generate JSON data with subfielded keys.

...I'm looking at you Dell PERC, with all your "Drive /c0/e32/s9 - Detailed Information" nonsense. - I KNOW what the device attachment is (I GAVE you that on the command line), what I want is CONSISTENT key names I can use JQ to filter on (This key should be "Drive Detailed Information" - or something even LESS of a mouthful).

I miss the olden days of Windows Media Player 9. Minimalist and practical.

Spotify UI is close to unbearable to me nowadays. Sluggish and heavy.

Hmm, looks like the login process in the mastodon.el is complicated AF.

Two possible places to store the credentials: ~/.authinfo.gpg and ~/.emacs.d/mastodon.plstore (both support GPG encryption).

When I make first login the mastodon.el asks me about passphrase then about password :drgn_think_woozy: . Both entered strings should match.

After some experiments I realized that it asks me not about my #Mastodon password but about passphrase to unlock my GPG key (twice :drgn_knife_angry: , then other programs, like Magit or pass frontend doing this only once).

Then, I successfully logged in by entering GPG passphrase twice, entering authorization code from Mastodon instance to authorize mastodon.el and entering the GPG passphrase to store necessary credentials in the ~/.emacs.d/mastodon.plstore (twice again :drgn_knife_angry: ).

The official documentation states that mastodon.el will store credentials in the ~/.authinfo.gpg since 2.0.0, but this is not true :drgn_knife_angry: . I'm using version 2.0.2 from NonGNU ELPA and it is still saves all credentials to the aforementioned mastodon.plstore. Despite my auth-sources is:

("~/.authinfo.gpg" "~/.netrc")

After I restart Emacs and enter M-x mastodon, I got:

Decrypting /home/drag0n/.emacs.d/mastodon.plstore...done
Loading home timeline...
Contacting host: mastodon.bsd.cafe:443
Loading fediverse account nil on mastodon.bsd.cafe...
error in process filter: mastodon-tl--init*: Looks like the server bugged out: "The access token was revoked"
error in process filter: Looks like the server bugged out: "The access token was revoked"

While I didn't revoked access token, it is still visible in the Mastodon settings, in the list of my authorized applications.

And both mastodon-instance-url and mastodon-active-user have valid values, pointing to the my actual account.

0/10 will not recommend :drgn_knife_angry:

Google's forced bloatware is driving me insane!

I'm absolutely sick and tired of Google shoving its useless crap onto my device, with no way to disable or remove it!

At this rate, I might as well have bought an iPhone... Oh wait, the EU actually bans reflashing Android devices now?!

Not surprising, though. How can they force users to become consumers of 'one-year disposable junk'? It's not profitable for them when phones actually last 10 or 15 years.

Why, I mean why why why do we need an app to show the ticket to Ed Sheeran's concert???

Why can't I just get the pdf instead of installing the app, create an account there and import the ticket from my online account?

Sometimes I wonder what the world is becoming. And yes, I feel like a proud boomer who regrets the old days of tech. Just send me the damned pdf!!!!

Spent better part of last night, running around the office building and borrowing HDMI capable displays. And no fucking dice (8 displays, 3 cables, and 2 DP converters tried, thus at least 48 combinations). This industrial Intel based board is just not compatible anymore with modern displays and resolutions. So how the fuck am I going to get into it's highly guarded BIOS?

Who thought that HDMI was a good idea?

It just occurred to me that when someone asks for information that you could easily find online:

  1. they're not asking for the information, and
  2. it's not easy to find things online

Let me explain, Tarantino-style.

  1. People often say "G00gle it!" because if they found it that way, then so could you. This is actually a poor assumption. Not only do search engines vary results based on location and other factors, more importantly, the person who you are saying "Juugull EET!" to IS NOT YOU.

As an individual who is particularly skilled and experienced in technical matters, not only do I know the right search terms to find a thing online, I also (and this is crucial and leads to point number 1) know what I'm looking for.

  1. People don't want just any information. They want information that is:

• credible,
• vetted,
• trustworthy,
• reliable, and
safe

With all the information and misinformation online, all the scams, and hacks, and frauds, it seems like everyone is out to make a buck off you, legally, or not. With my tech experience, it is trivial to spot scams and know good information from bad. However, the training and experience I have wasn't easy and came after years of study and exposure. Not many have it.

People don't want information. They want assistance that is trustworthy, safe, and reliable. Those of us with tech skills might remember that the next time they go to tell someone to "Yoogl It".

Things that are simple to some, are mountainous to others.
