How do I get out of the culture wars? I often seem to be a fighting member of the culture wars. And then I saw what happened. I remember November 2016, having moved to a small town in independent and Republican voting territory, watching Trump win. (I was still on Facebook back then. Before my friends & followers figured out what was going on with the election, I started posting handbaskets. Photos of baskets. Basket after basket. It took a while before people slowly figured it out. Ha ha ha. I drank more cider and posted another basket.)
I quit the Democratic party, went NAV, and spent much of the next few years attempting to meditate, cogitate, forest-walk, and dark-bathe my way through the snarl in my brain: what were my true values, and how could I separate those from policies? From social & political *tactics* that groups of people (and hey, we are prone to groupthink) were attempting to enact?
I thought a great deal about how the #1 way to prepare a population to accept fascism was this: get them to dehumanize each other. Once people are willing to do that — and for years, I and my left-liberal friends had become increasingly willing to be super mean "funny" judgemental and yes, dehumanizing, of those who hadn't caught up with us yet — once people are willing to dismiss, derail, or attack each other in this way, the population is ready to receive fascism. To welcome it. To become it. I felt duped by my own activism, my willingness to fight for what was clearly "right" and "good."
Where had we gone wrong? Where had I been an active, bad part of this mess, leading up to Trump's election? How could I try to see Others as real people -- stop Othering conservatives? I'd had years to try this in my own family. Maybe I'd gotten a little somewhere with it. Maybe not. These days I'm just so tired. I'm woker than many people I know, but I still feel like getting online is being bombarded with ugly grenades of wokeness. No one will ever be perfect enough for the movement(s). No one will ever be inclusive enough, wounded enough, a good enough ally. We will never defeat capitalism in quite a groovy enough way, never confess our racism loudly enough, never eschew Harry Potter movies in a violent enough fashion.
Anyone who dares think their own thoughts and post them will be canceled or attempted-canceled. The problem is? THIS FEEDS THE CONSERVATIVES. It is just plain ammunition for them. We are playing into their hands. They love their persecution complex!! It is part of American Christianity, and until that is understood, we (wait, "we"? Am I even still part of this thing?) will continue to play into their hands, and offer them plenty of material to feel persecuted about... often while complaining about our own persecution.
Where does it stop? How do we get off the train? Does everyone honestly still believe this is a good train to be on?
I mean, I hope I'm wrong; I hope the inclusive side will win, win, and win some more. But it doesn't look good. The tactics look self-serving and excluding. I fear for the future.
