Welp, this weekend is Hells Canyon and unlike last year it is expected to be cold and rainy.
The good news is my friends are looking to go farther this year and I will be bringing my GoPro

I have about 9 hours of footage to go through and edit but I found a section of the raw footage that is not horrible.
The cliff edges look a lot scarier than they do in person but I might have just been focusiong on the beauty out there at the time.

Really dropped the ball here because I have no photos of the crazy switchbacks that make up the ends in these charts. While I miss the boat ride, I like the out and back a lot better.

the out and back route so it is symmetrical. there is an early climb from 375m to 490m in a steep step shape. coming back there are the switchbacks that go straight up from 370m to 490m in a 3rd the distance. "fun"the full track, 1 way from the boat drop off. the elevation appears shifted up 200m higher but the same shape. the switchbacks were not in place this year so same 110m gain but even steeper. they put the switchbacks in last year.

What a day. This is probably the most beautiful run I have this year but I will be keeping an eye out and think there might be 1 or 2 that will capture my heart like Hell's Canyon.
Next up: Spokane River Run 50k on April 21st

selfie of me pretty close to the snake river. the day is bright and sunny and my water nozzle is still assaulting me.view of the river watching the boat take runners to the drop off point.looking back on trail with the river on the left and a runner group friend coming up the trail.view of the trail with a steep climb. the climb is steep enough to warrant some steps to help with the like top layer

Get ready for a lot of pictures of Hell's Canyon

Hell's Canyon by the numbers. My goal was to be out for at least 10 hours and be able to maintain energy throughout. This was a huge success and I'm so happy with it.

view of the snake river from about 25m up. the angle is looking down and you can see a little white water.

Hells canyon in the books. I got to run a bit with the group and run the second half and my race. I was able to stay out for almost 10 hours jumping into zone 2 with an aerobic push every now and then.. I needed a little convincing at the end from my new friend but the leg check for the last few km went great. I had power and dexterity in my feet to zoom down and up the rocks and finish strong.
10/10 would recommend.

view of the snake river from 10-20 m up. the river snakes along winding as it disappears in the distanceview of the trail climbing up with 1 side a rock wall and the other a straight deep down 10m or so. the sun is shiningSelfie of me with my running group. my water spigot appears to be attacking me. in the background you can see the snake river between Idaho and Oregonview of the snake river from 5m or so high. you can see down the trail and the river disappears behind some rocks.

My legs are reporting that I may in fact just taper this week. Probably get a neighborhood run in to keep the legs warm later but they appear tired of my shit and needing a break. I am thinking I will skip the boat ride and do an out and back at Hells Canyon this weekend. Essentially the last half of this run out and back.

elevation chart showing 1,369m gained with max elevation at 498m. the second half has a few steep 100m climbs on it and should end up with >1,500m gained.

My next run/race is in a couple months, this was last year's take on it. I get excited while training when I think about this run coming up.

View of the snake river from the trail along the Idaho side. The sky is blue with a couple dots for clouds. The sides are brown and the trail goes around a little bend and disappears.
Run: 44.7 km, Elevation Gain: 1,369 m, Time: 6h 47m.

The run that inspired my actions and training this summer. I was too embarrassed to post this when I ran it and it was a couple hours slower than my previous year, silly I know that now.
My main takeaway from it was I need to fuel better. Since then I am a much more capable runner that has put in the work to be better.

View of the snake river with brown hills on the sides. just ahead you can see snow capped mountains.

What a run. We ended up getting dropped at the half location so we ran out 6 miles and got our full in anyway.

It's all smiles to start. My running buddy and myself for a quick selfie on trail.Snake River and the trail we were heading out on.View behind showing the trail path taken. I have a 45 km, 2300m climb run coming up in about 5 weeks which sounds crazy but with views like this, also worth it.
