The colonnades of the Church of Peace in Potsdam exude a special calm. Their simple, harmonious lines capture the light in a way that makes the space feel almost timeless. Here, architectural elegance meets spiritual reflection, creating a perfect symbiosis of form and function.

I took this in 2022 at Saint Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) in Venice. St. Mark's Basilica traces its origins back to the year 828 AD when the revered Saint Mark relics were either transported or, regrettably, misappropriated from Alexandria. A bad fire swept through the edifice in 976, but by 978, the church was reconstructed.

This is an interior corner of an old Italian basilica. A very large pillar is in the foreground. The ceilings are gilded.

This is the inside of a worship space. You can see seats facing an altar. The walls and ceiling are gilded and there is a mildly turkish look to the space.

In 1846, this church played a pivotal role in an uprising when Mexicans and Indigenous people resisted the American annexation of their territory during the Mexican-American War. They killed the newly appointed American governor, Charles Bent, and marched on Santa Fe. Government troops and volunteers advanced on Taos, where they launched an assault on the Mexican and Indigenous dissidents seeking sanctuary within the formidable walls of the San Geronimo church. The church, boasting walls measuring between 3 and 7 feet in thickness acted as an impregnable fortress. The first day the American cannon balls lodged themselves in the thick adobe with little effect. Seeing that the bombardment was not successful, the next day forces led by Colonel Price resorted to setting the roof on fire and storming the building. The cannon ball-riddled mission church was left to ruin and a new church was built in 1850. I took this photo when I was there in 2016.

This is a church ruin and cemetery in northern New Mexico. The remains of the church are made of adobe and graves are marked with simple crosses. The ground is very tan and the sky is blue.

The 1894 Emmanuel Anglican Church in Holland Manitoba was designed by local architect Andrew Maxwell, a Scottish immigrant who also designed two other churches in Holland, and several more in the area. At some point in the early 2000s the church was deconsecrated and is now called the Holland Historic Church, and serves as a museum for local history.

My poor floor.
I spent 10 years looking after and maintaining the chapel floors at Kings College, Cambridge and two years ago the works were taken 'in house'
Such a shame to see it looking flat, discoloured and lifeless.
