I’m holding my sketchbook in my left hand up next to a final painting in watercolor. The sketchbook is open to the page of a sketch of a clock face with a tiny, female figure, perched in between the minutes hand, and the hours hand. It’s a very sketchy little rough ink drawing. Basically a concept sketch that I did for the 2018 Inktober word prompt on October 14, “Clock”. The final painting has the same image but done in watercolour and much larger. So it is interesting to see the original concept sketch from five years ago to the painting that I’ve just completed in the last few weeks. The original ink sketch is about 3 or 4 inches in diameter the final painting is about 21 in.² and it is in full colour with gold leaf around the rim of the clock!

This is my extremely simple, thumbnail sketch on a Post-it note. The sketches of a female figure standing and pointing off to the left, her arm, goes right off of the edge of the paper, and comes in on the right side of the paper and points to her own self. This is a very preliminary concept, sketch and a stick figure style. Many of my ideas and concepts start like this.

This is an ink sketch that I did five years ago for Inktober, based on the prompt “stretch”. The sketch is of a young, female, figure, standing and pointing off to the left. Her arm is stretched off of the page. The arm returns on to the right of the page and points to her own self. It is a play on words. The ink sketch is done in micron pen, which is a uniform line in black ink, and it is a simple and slightly scratchy style.

This is the final painting, in watercolor, that I have done based on my Inktober sketch for the word “stretch“. The painting is called “How to stretch a point”. It shows a woman standing, full figure, wearing a flowing white dress. She is pointing off the page on the left, and her arm is very stretched. The arm actually is so stretched that it comes in on the right side of the page, pointing to her own self. She is casually looking over her shoulder at the hand that is pointing to her.
