Sanja is heavily invested in AI/AGI safety and ethical, inclusive software engineering, the Digital Humanism Conference #DigHum2025 truly delivered!
I went in with curiosity and came out with not one, but two notebooks full of notes, quotes, and ideas. From AI and platform power to democracy and digital rights, the discussions were as rich as they were urgent.

I tried to capture some highlights, reflections, and memorable moments in this blog post for ICT4D.at:

There was so much more than I could fit into one post – but if you were there (or just curious about DigitalHumanism), I’d love to hear what resonated with you.

Join Us for an Inspiring Event in Vienna: Connecting Communities through Learning, Technology & Transformative Design

Please register here via Mobilizon (no account needed) or here via LinkedIn

📅 Date: Friday, 11th April
🕜 Time: 13:30 – 17:00
📍 Venue: Re:Kompany Café, Schönburgstraße 36/8-9, 1040 Vienna

This is an official invite for joint event hosted by ICT4D.at (Austria), Project DEFY (India), and The Agami Project (India/Austria) – bringing together voices from education, technology, and transformative architectural design. This in-person gathering will feature the team from Project DEFY (India) visiting Vienna and offer a unique opportunity to explore the intersections of self-designed learning, open-source technologies, and community-centred architecture projects.

Together, we will:

  • Share Project DEFY’s mission to radically reimagine education by replacing traditional schooling with spaces for curiosity, self-direction, and community-driven learning.
  • Present ICT4D.at’s impactful work in India since 2017 to improve computer science education and empower local communities through inclusive, tech-based initiatives.
  • Introduce the new self-learning center in South India, co-designed by Project DEFY and The Agami Project.
  • Explore future visions and collaborative opportunities over delicious Indian snacks and chai!

About the organizing partners:

  • Project DEFY – With over 5,000 people empowered across 33 Nooks (self-learning centers) in 5 countries, Project DEFY creates spaces that challenge conventional education by giving individuals the tools to shape their own learning journeys. Among numerous international accolades, the organization has been recognized as one of the most impactful and scalable innovations globally by the education non-profit HundrED, earning a place in the prestigious HundrED 2022 Global Collection.
  •  ICT4D.at – As an Austrian-based NGO, ICT4D.at leverages information and communication technologies for global development, with long-standing projects in India, EU and Africa. With projects on 3 continents, ICT4D.at is a member of the Internet Government Forum Austria, a partner of the ICT4D Collective, and part of Global Responsibility Austria.
  • The Agami Project – Based in India and Austria, The Agami Project explores sustainable architecture as a catalyst for social and environmental resilience, designing community-rooted Spaces of Possibilities. Avinash Ankalge, co-founder of The Agami Project and the architecture office A Threshold, was recently awarded the ‘AR Emerging Awards 2024’ by the prestigious publication The Architectural Review, recognizing him as one of the most promising young architects on a global scale.

We’d be delighted to welcome you and exchange perspectives on how to empower communities through shared knowledge, inclusive technology, and spatial transformation!

My favorite place to post about with a charitable or "for good" focus, , , community tech centers, , ethics regarding such, & all things went away.
So I started the r/Tech4Causes subreddit.

My first job in digital development was in 1988 and it has been a litany of failure, White saviourism, pushing tech-solutionism and selling out to funders - as I explain in this auto-ethnographical chapter. taylorfrancis.com/chapters/oa-

Anne and @spipau visited the ICTD conference in Nairobi. They presented their research paper where they compare 10 years of mobile phone usage in Ghana's high schools, read more here:

My favorite online community to share / stories & resources closed. So I started a subreddit, r/Tech4Causes. I post such info here too, but the subreddit is a way to see the info all in one place. Others' posting on-topic resources are welcomed.

I highly recommend to watch these lectures from Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson. They wrote a fantastic book called "why nations fail" and got awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize for economics:
