Years ago I read a biography of Shakespeare, and how he was born in the same year as an outbreak of plague. In the parish register of births and deaths for that year someone wrote in the margin "hic incipit pestis" - "here begins the plague". I keep thinking about that for Monday. Here begins the plague. I'm not sure if it's better or worse that we know it's coming. Better, I suppose, in that you can try and mentally prepare for it. Worse for all of the endless dread of impending doom.
