Stunning! Just stunning.

Empire's Tuesday Night Skate rolled and it looks like they had ~ 20 skaters despite the heatwave and the 90+°F temperatures.

Meanwhile, some of the Aussie skaters we follow on Strava are complaining it's so very cold when it's in the 40s or 50s °F? That's perfect skating weather if you dress for it.

The weather sucks so much right now. We can sort of understand the people who gathered to roll the Monday Night Skate in Jersey in the evening. But the area speed skaters who tried to get in a workout earlier in the day… mind blown 🤯!

Seriously hoping we do NOT see any Strava posts by #NYC area skaters rolling Tuesday 6/24.

Hey, skate peeps. We know many of you (like us) were out rolling in Saturday's warm, humid weather. Good for you. (Long look over at those peeps who did the skate-my-age roll with a dude who turned 65! You weirdos.)

But the heatwave is now here, and it's time to take a few days off. We'll skate with you on the other side.

Always sweet to roll newly resurfaced streets in #NYC. In this case, Central Park West btw W86 and W96.

Hello cows 👋🏻🐄

The road at the mill opened back up, so I could skate some further.

There is a small road for walking/biking/skating on the left side with a ditvh nect to it seperating it from the fields.

Finally past that mess, and almost to 72nd St, after which the West Side Bike Path the rest of the way to the Battery is generally very good to excellent. (Excepting that bit by Pier 94.)

But given the messy bits in Fort Washington Park and by the Boat Basin, we don't plan to skate the path north of 72nd St anytime soon no matter how nice Cherry Walk is. And certainly not after dark — you need good light to deal with some of the bad spots.

Then getting down into the 80s and approaching the Boat Basin, the #RiversidePark promenade starts getting cruddy. A couple honest-to-God sinkholes in the path.

ANd then you get to the Boat Basin, and have to deal with the brick "speed bumps" in the walkway. Those have been a pain for years than we can count, but with all the other added obstacles and distractions, what a nightmare.

Continuing south…

Cherry Walk — the section of the West Side Bike Path from Harlem Piers (125th St) down to 100th St — that re-opened recently is really nice. As in really-really. Entirely re-surfaced except for a couple very short bits that were probably resurfaced a few years ago during another project.

We were also happy to discover that a section of the #RiversidePark promenade in the high 90s alongside the tennis courts had been partially resurfaced.

Below that from about 172nd St 'latitude' to 125th, it's a mix of good spots and average spots, some of the average spots having been good 4-5 years ago but not so much now.

Only careful spot in that stretch is the weekend barbecue territory just north of Riverbank State Park, i.e., in the upper 140s. But it was like that the last time we rolled through there.

Monday evening (before the rain), we rolled from the West Side Bike Path from Jeffrey's Hook (the Little Red Lighthouse) to the Battery, and conditions were… variable. Mostly good to excellent, but some real crap along the way.

Up in the north, the condition of the bikepath alongside and to the south of the Fort Washington Park tennis courts is bad. Not completely un-skateable, but definitely 'be very careful' territory.

Out skating Thursday evening, and a mile from home, wiped out because of something slick spilled from restaurant garbage along the side of Amsterdam Ave.

Big thanks to the cabbie who was behind me and did not run me over. Also to the pedestrian who retrieved my iPhone from where it slid 10 feet up the street. (Yes, it was in my hand when I went down.)

Additional thx to the other five pedestrians who were right there and wanted to make sure I was okay.

I love New Yorkers.

We were out for a skate Thursday evening, and who did we find assembling in #CentralPark? Empire Speed, of course.

They must have had a great training session, because afterward we saw a few of them posting on #Strava that they had set PRs skating various segments of the CP loop.

Tried to talk myself out of it at the last minute but I went for a skate after work today. Got some nice reactions from folks driving by, an air high five and a thumbs up. I'm glad I got back out on the road in the sunshine.

Never know what you might see a skater rolling on on the West Side Bike Path.

Good night for a roll, and even better to see this skater and 4-5 other young skaters out enjoying it, too.

Our Strava feed tells us that Empire Speed finally met for a training session on the mostly repaved Central Park loop yesterday evening. Apparently, it's rained on Thursday more often in the past month than we remember.

Anyhow, that means Empire Speed is now training twice a week — Thursday evening in CP and Sunday morning in Prospect. Other ad hoc sessions may also occur for things like sprint drills, etc.

Hearing last week that a bit of East River Park had re-opened, we took a look-see Thursday evening. It was fine.

Big problem is that only 0.25 miles of path along the shoreline is open. And that bit is hexagonal pavers with a slight edge bevel. So not the best #InlineSkating.

There is a marked #bikeNYC lane inland near the FDR, but it's even shorter.

Only access is via a snazzy new pedestrian bridge at the end of Delancey St. (south side).

Looks like a great place for a picnic.

Out for a solo skate on Tuesday night.

We encountered 'a' Tuesday night skate, but it was mostly dudes on skateboards, so you know, not 'the' Tuesday Night Skate.

Anyhow, took a break at Greenpoint to admire the Manhattan Midtown view, and whoa, OMG, they turned on all the lights at the new Chase-Morgan building.

#NYC #InlineSkating

Photo looking across the East River at the Manhattan Midtown skyline, and OMG, there's a very tall but big-ass blocky building toward the right that is lit up like everybody, everybody, is working late.
