I’ve been on mastodon.social for almost 2 years now. I’m considering leaving the “mother ship” and moving to a more specialized instance. Can anyone recommend a good server for a left-leaning #Canadian #Writer #Programmer #Sysadmin #Linux nerd who also likes #Camping #Canoeing and raising #CarnivorousPlants ?

It is very long, but the concluding paragraph is interesting.

It would be nice, but that would clearly mean either subscription fees or advertising. And this would open it up to commercial operators. It could be open source, but not "Free" in the same way that the Fediverse is today.

As far as I can fell there's not nearly as much bullshittery that would make it unappealing to sign up, but if you see this, please let me know if I'm about to wade into a bunch of #drama about those instances. I'm shit at keeping up with who's being a dipshit.

We're trying to promote small instances (increased decentralization) with moderated signups (saver for the wole Fediverse) that opt-in to be added to our list (consent).

These days when I ask someone to join me on Mastodon. I like to pair that ask with a recommendation for a great server to join. Obviously they are very welcome to go down a rabbit hole themselves and pick out one themselves, but in my experience a thoughtful recommendation of a suitable server or two really helps them to actually step across and to feel supported in the process.

I see it as this 'first account' divide, once in and playing around, people get much more confident either bedding in with where they started or making additional accounts on other servers, for themselves or their projects/orgs.

It's sort of like recommending a good place to go for dinner or a good wine or movie suggesstion.

Do you have certain mastodon servers you recommend to particular people, would love to hear your thoughts.
