Veined sun orchids (Thelymitra cyanea) starting to open in swampy heathland near Monga, NSW. This widespread summer-flowering sun orchid is generally found in the mountains above 1000m in NSW but can be found at lower altitudes closer to the coast in East Gippsland, VIC.

Last purple donkey orchids (Diuris punctata) for the year in Croajingolong NP, VIC (mid-Nov). Good to see increased numbers of these beautiful orchids at this location in a season where spring rainfall was fairly low and many other orchids were harder to find than usual.

Best patch of hyacinth orchids I've seen out so far this year at Corunna, NSW - Dipodium punctatum (purple hyacinth orchids). Starting to see a few more plants up and out around the local district - hopefully today's first real rain since winter will help them along!

Cymbidium sauve (Grass-leaf Cymbidium / snake orchid) at Corunna, NSW. Flowering was a little reduced this year with very little spring rainfall at Corunna but the few plants still out enjoyed some rare moisture from an afternoon storm passing through today.

Several really nice variations in both colour & floral structures in this year's Corunna backdoor sun orchids (Thelymitra sp. - maybe T.peniculata and/or T. pauciflora). Almost all plants set seed (probably self-pollinated as many flowers didn't open at all and those that did were generally only open for an hour or two) so there should be another good showing next spring!

Purple hyacinth orchid (Dipodium punctatum) at Corunna, NSW. This is usually the least common of the 3 x local Dipodium species found at (or near) my place though it can sometimes be seen flowering well into January. Very few out so far this year after a very dry spring.

Another interesting small sun orchid (Thelymitra sp.) near Gipsy Point, VIC. If not a late season deformity then could be the smallest spotted sun orchid (T. ixioides) form I've seen. Only one flower out - maybe a hybrid with T. pauciflora (or similar) which grow nearby and flower earlier in spring.

Purple donkey orchid (Diuris punctata) still flowering in mid-November on the edge of Croajingolong NP, VIC. Lightly blotched forms are possibly hybrids with Diuris meridionalis ms (blotched donkey orchid) but still haven't sighted this rare species at this location.

Rosy hyacinth orchid (Dipodium roseum) at Corunna, NSW. Dipodium are usually the most visible summer orchids around Corunna with 3 x species growing locally - often in large numbers. But only the one single plant out so far at home this year after a very dry spring.

Cymbidium sauve (Grass-leaf Cymbidium / snake orchid) at Corunna, NSW. Common here in state forest - often growing on tree stumps left from logging. Only one of the 3 x NSW Cymbidiums that is found in the southern half of the state (as far south as Eden).

Sun orchids (Thelymitra sp.) at the back of my house at Corunna, NSW finally finished up flowering in early Nov, almost a month to the day after the first early flowers appeared. A lot of variations in this patch of 150+ plants although most flowers were the same size - tip of my little finger here for scale (again!) Maybe T.peniculata and/or T. pauciflora ...

Tailed leek orchids (Prasophyllum appendiculatum) variations near Genoa, VIC. Flower colour is quite variable in this rare species with a mix of yellow, brown, red and purple forms often growing close together. Good no's out this spring despite the dry conditions.

Copper beard orchid (Calochilus campestris) variations north of Mallacoota, VIC. Good numbers of this widespread and variable species out in roadside heathland at the start of November - with a nice range of beard styles on show!

Didn't find any rare blotched donkey orchids (Diuris meridionalis ms) on the last East Gippsland trip - but did find flowers that look like hybrids with the purple donkey orchid (D. punctata) which grows nearby. So probably still worth another look for D. meridionalis!

Still some amazing diversity in the roadside orchid species near Mallacoota, VIC at the start of Nov. with good numbers of beard and onion orchids out, the occasional large duck and the last few spotted sun orchids finishing up. Not bad for a fairly dry spring ...

Interesting tiny sun orchid (Thelymitra sp.) in heathland north of Mallacoota, VIC. If not a late season deformity then this is probably the smallest sun orchid flower I've come across - tip of my little finger here for scale. Only found the one flower out while walking back to the car - maybe T. brevifolia (pepper-top sun orchid)? If not then a similar species somewhere in the T. pauciflora group - although I've never actually seen these growing at this location in the past.
