We are happy to welcome our new colleague Rafael Petronilo in our FIZ KDAI research team! Rafael originally comes from Portugal and is an expert in deep learning and knowledge graphs and we are very much looking forward to collaborate with him. He will be supporting our BMF project "Themenportal Wiedergutmachung nationalsozialistischen Unrechts"

Rafael standing in front of our grass world map in the FIZ Karlsruhe World Café. 🗨️Here's what Rafael himself says about his new job:
!I am excited to join FIZ as a PhD student and for the opportunity to work with this team. I have been fascinated by the concept of AI from a very young age. While growing up, it was exciting to see the technology evolve and how the line between science fiction and reality started blurring in the field. I aspire to be able to contribute to the further development of AI technologies. At the university, I did a bachelor's and master's degree in Computer Science and Engineering, focusing on multiple different AI topics, among which deep learning, natural language processing, neurosymbolic AI, explainable AI, knowledge representation, and automated reasoning. Now I wish to continue working towards pursuing an AI-focused research career. I think in the ISE department at FIZ I will have the opportunity to work with and learn from incredible people, facing new interesting challenges and finding innovative ways to tackle them."

Reconciliation of triple stores and property graphs is an old topic and many have tried to tackle it (from every angle and tech). It's polarizing and the latest RDF-* and SPARQL-* announcements turn an already complex field into more syntax and complexity. When flexibility equals complexity it seldom leads to more adoption.

We are happy to announce the release of the 1.2 version of OntoWeaver, the tool that sits on top of BioCypher and allows to easily make independent adapters parsing structure data, from just a simple declaration of a mapping: github.com/oncodash/ontoweaver

The main new feature is adapters for structured documents: OWL (ontology files' populated graph), XML and JSON documents, and some new high-level information fusion functions.

The package is available on PyPI, now in the BioCypher community: pypi.org/project/ontoweaver/1.

Brad Bolliger came to knowledge graphs via enterprise system design and data analytics. That background informs their pragmatic approach to the use of semantic technology in systems that facilitate information exchange across government agencies.

I really appreciate Brad's thoughtfulness and ability to connect systems architectures to and management. Hope you enjoy the conversation, too.

There’s a tension between being semantically rich (using your own terms and definitions), and being semantically aligned, in which you try to reuse terms from other vocabularies.

I think we need a new concept: eventual . I propose to start rich with your own vocabularies, and only make alignments when there’s a concrete reason for building those.

pietercolpaert.be/interoperabi

Reusable specifications stack: project goals → interaction patterns → shapes → vocabularies → alignments. The burden of aligning data has always been on the integrator. Linked Data is not about shifting this burden to the data producers entirely, but about distributing the burden equally in the ecosystem.

Yesterday, I had the honor to deliver an invited talk with the title "Convenience vs Competence: the Evolving Role of Foundational Knowledge in AI-Driven Research" at the new year's receiption of the computer science faculty at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Very happy to be at the place again, where I did my first PostDoc more than 20 years ago and meeting many old friends. :)
