We are happy to announce the release of the 1.2 version of OntoWeaver, the tool that sits on top of BioCypher and allows to easily make independent adapters parsing structure data, from just a simple declaration of a mapping: github.com/oncodash/ontoweaver

The main new feature is adapters for structured documents: OWL (ontology files' populated graph), XML and JSON documents, and some new high-level information fusion functions.

The package is available on PyPI, now in the BioCypher community: pypi.org/project/ontoweaver/1.

Yesterday, I had the honor to deliver an invited talk with the title "Convenience vs Competence: the Evolving Role of Foundational Knowledge in AI-Driven Research" at the new year's receiption of the computer science faculty at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Very happy to be at the place again, where I did my first PostDoc more than 20 years ago and meeting many old friends. :)

Though methodologically distinct, both unsettle substance-based and stress the relational nature of existence.

This quantum picture of matter as relational and distributional, rather than as composed of intrinsically independent substances, provides a natural point of contact with the Buddhist analysis of phenomena as conditioned, empty of fixed essence, and defined by their dependencies. Besides others, he is demonstrating that our #nfdicore ontology is registered at Semantic Farm (= an open source, domain-agnostic, community curated semantic space registry, meta-registry, and compact identifier resolver.)

An ontology is a map that connects people, documents, events, processes, and meanings. It doesn’t just “classify” things it helps a system understand why they are related and what they actually represent.

Ontology is shaping up to be the buzzword of 2026 because they are offering what #LLMs are lacking: formal grounding

LLMs offer creativity but need logical grounding. Ontologies provide this formal structure, anchoring meaning and unifying diverse data sources into a single semantic layer. They are essential for achieving precision and are one of the most reliable defense mechanisms against #AI #hallucination.

The image is a political cartoon that illustrates a perceived shift in the artificial intelligence (AI) community's perspective on the importance of "ontology" between 2023 and 2026.
- 2023: The term "ontology" was widely rejected in the AI field, as depicted by a stamp machine smashing documents labeled "ontology rejected".
- 2026: The cartoon predicts that "ontology" will be a required component for "The Future AI Foundation," as shown by a stamp machine approving documents with the label "ontology required".
Context: Ontology in AI refers to a formal naming and definition of the types, properties, and interrelationships of the entities that exist for a particular domain of discourse, which can help structure AI systems.
Foundations: Several real-world AI foundations and services exist, focused on areas like research, standards, and secure deployment of AI models.
